As a seasoned crypto investor, I was eagerly anticipating some mention of digital assets during Thursday’s presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. The crypto industry had been buzzing with excitement in the lead-up to the event, as Trump had previously declared himself “the crypto president” and expressed his intention to make the US a hub for crypto development.

On Thursday night, Joe Biden and Donald Trump, the nominees of their respective political parties in the upcoming November elections, engaged in a fierce debate during their first face-off. The entire world watched as these two prominent figures clashed in this significant political event. Notably, many individuals from the crypto industry also tuned in to witness the unfolding developments.

Despite the buzz surrounding cryptocurrencies in the lead-up to the decade’s end, the nominees at the event failed to acknowledge or discuss this topic during their speeches. Instead, they focused on issues such as abortion, the economy, and climate change. The crypto community had hoped for some recognition or discussion of their industry following Trump’s expressed support for it in the previous weeks.

He announced his intention to become a strong advocate for cryptocurrency and position the United States as a leader in its advancement, showing support towards Bitcoin mining companies. Crypto supporters had anticipated that Trump would address digital assets during his speech, but he did not. There were expectations that he would criticize Biden’s negative stance on crypto and how the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), under Biden’s presidency, has hindered crypto from gaining mainstream acceptance in the country.

During the presidential debates, the nominees focused on different topics rather than their opposing views. At times, they engaged in personal attacks, bringing up seemingly trivial matters. For example, Trump and Biden exchanged words over their golfing abilities, with each claiming superiority as a means to demonstrate their fitness for leading the global community.

As a researcher studying the 2020 presidential debates, I’ve noticed that during the exchanges between Biden and Trump, there were instances of insults being hurled. Biden retorted with “You have the morals of an alley cat.” In response, Trump raised concerns over Biden’s speech clarity, stating “I honestly can’t make sense of what he said at the end of that sentence. I believe he might not even understand it himself.” This issue has become a significant point of discussion leading up to the elections, with many expressing apprehension regarding Biden’s apparent cognitive decline and its potential impact on voters. Additionally, Biden was suffering from a cold and a sore throat, which affected the clarity of his speech and made it raspy.

A CNN poll found that 67% of people who viewed the debate felt Trump won the showdown.
