Netflix’s Hit Fantasy Movie Officially Sets Streaming History After 52 Weeks

just set a new record.

The animated film KPop Demon Hunters, directed by Chris Appelhans and Maggie Kang, quickly became popular after its release on Netflix on June 20, 2025. It was a critical and audience success, earning two Academy Awards and becoming Netflix’s most-watched original movie ever.

Okay, so I was checking Netflix today and can you believe KPop Demon Hunters has been in the Top 10 for a full year? Seriously, 52 weeks! That’s a new record, apparently. It’s currently at number six this week with 3.6 million views. And it wasn’t just it – animation is really killing it right now. Swapped from 2026 is up there at number three, pulling in 5.7 million views and has been on the list for seven weeks now.

Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters is proving to be a big success. The film, about a popular K-Pop group that secretly fights demons, has earned high praise – currently boasting a 91% rating from critics and a remarkable 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

I recently checked out KPop Demon Hunters, and let me tell you, the hype is real. My colleague Ben Gibbons over at ScreenRant gave it a fantastic nine out of ten, and I completely agree. What really stood out to me was how well-developed the characters were, and the story itself was surprisingly engaging. Plus, the animation is just top-notch – it all comes together to create a truly compelling film.

This movie sounds like it shouldn’t work – a K-Pop musical combined with demon hunting in a family-friendly animated film! But surprisingly, it all comes together beautifully. The key is that the filmmakers handle each of these different parts really well.

The impressive animation in KPop Demon Hunters was a key factor in its success at the Academy Awards this year. The film won Best Animated Feature, surpassing nominees like Elio, Zootopia 2, Arco, and Little Amélie or the Character of Rain. It also took home the award for Best Original Song with “Golden,” beating out songs such as “I Lied to You” from Sinners.

As a huge animation fan, I’ve been following the numbers on this movie, and they’re just incredible! It’s already hit 325.1 million views – honestly, I can’t see anything topping that for a long time. It’s way ahead of the second most popular Netflix film ever, Red Notice from 2021, which has 230.9 million views. And Carry-On (2024) is in third place with 172.1 million – a great movie, but not quite at the same level!

Following the huge popularity of KPop Demon Hunters, a sequel is officially planned with creators Appelhans and Kang returning. Most of the original stars, including Arden Cho, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, and Yunjin Kim, are likely to reprise their roles. KPop Demon Hunters 2 is aiming for a 2029 release, so fans shouldn’t expect to see trailers or other promotional content for quite some time.

Considering how successful the first movie was and this latest achievement, people will likely have high hopes for the next installment. Fortunately, since the same talented team is working on it, the continuation of KPop Demon Hunters should be a hit with viewers.
