Whether you see it as a timeless classic or a thing of the past, the Western genre is making a comeback. Recent TV shows are proving that Westerns can still resonate with audiences by taking familiar themes and characters and updating them for modern times. Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone is a prime example, largely credited with sparking this renewed interest. However, successful Western shows don’t need to follow the same expansive style as Yellowstone to be popular.
While Taylor Sheridan’s Westerns have gained popularity, other critically acclaimed shows have explored the genre in different ways. Many recent Western TV series are historical dramas, but they avoid the romanticized portrayal of the Old West often found in classic Westerns. A prime example is Netflix’s American Primeval, which blends characters reminiscent of Tombstone with the gritty violence of the horror film Bone Tomahawk. The series centers on Sara Rowell (Betty Gilpin) and her journey across the frontier to escape her past.
“American Primeval” is a shockingly violent and graphic Western, filled with battles, scalping, and assaults, which sets it apart from typical adventure stories. However, this boldness is precisely what the Western genre needs to move forward and avoid repeating old clichés. With an 87% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes – higher than “Yellowstone’s” 76% – the show demonstrates that audiences are open to fresh, creative takes on the Western genre.
As a big fan of atmospheric horror, I’ve been following the reaction to American Primeval, and it’s definitely been a mixed bag. Some critics felt the show focused a little too much on looking good and not enough on developing its characters. But honestly, I think a lot of reviewers really got what the show was doing – it really lets its actors shine. That’s why some of the deaths hit so hard; you genuinely feel for these people. And speaking of the cast, it’s fantastic – Kim Coates and Dane DeHaan are great, but Betty Gilpin is a real standout, playing a role that’s totally different from anything she’s done before.
American Primeval Gave One Actor Their Best Role In Years
I’ve been really impressed with the cast of American Primeval – it’s a great mix of familiar faces and exciting new talent. It’s cool to see so many actors stretching themselves and showing us something different. Everyone knows Betty Gilpin really broke out with GLOW and her Emmy noms were so deserved, but American Primeval has given another actor a fantastic role – honestly, it’s the best work I’ve seen from them in ages!
Before starring in American Primeval, Taylor Kitsch was most recognized for his role as Tim Riggins, the popular, troubled character in the Friday Night Lights TV series. That show launched his career and earned him two Teen Choice Award nominations. While he’s since appeared in successful action films like 21 Bridges and TV shows such as True Detective and The Terminal List, he hadn’t often been given the chance to play a truly layered character – until American Primeval, which quickly became one of his best roles.
Taylor Kitsch portrays Isaac Reed, a skilled guide and outdoorsman, who helps Sara and her son on their challenging journey because of his knowledge of the terrain. Kitsch delivered a powerful performance, fully immersing himself in the role, and his dedication was evident even through difficult filming conditions. He described making American Primeval as incredibly tough, mentioning harsh weather and having to learn to ride a horse with a broken foot. Despite the hardships, his performance received widespread acclaim, and his final scene is considered a highlight of the series.
