Dua Lipa sues Samsung for $15 million after her photo appears on TV boxes

Dua Lipa is taking legal action against Samsung, claiming they used a photo of her on their television packaging without getting her approval. She’s seeking $15 million in damages.

Dua Lipa is suing Samsung for $15 million, claiming the company used a copyrighted photo of her on their TV packaging without her consent or paying her. She says she didn’t know about or approve the use of the image.

A lawsuit was filed on May 8, 2026, in California federal court regarding a photograph of Dua Lipa. The photo, taken backstage at the 2024 Austin City Limits festival, is copyrighted by Lipa herself.

The legal documents state that Samsung produced and sold large quantities of televisions in packaging that clearly displayed the image. When Dua Lipa’s team asked them to stop in June 2025, Samsung reportedly responded in a disrespectful manner and continued to use the unauthorized packaging.

Fans say they bought the TV because her face was on the box

Dua Lipa’s lawyers are arguing that the unauthorized use of her image is more than just a copyright issue. Because she represents major brands like Versace, Porsche, Bvlgari, and YSL Beauty, they claim that putting her picture on the packaging of inexpensive electronics misled customers into thinking she had officially endorsed the product.

The product’s packaging quickly gained attention online, especially after a post about it from the fan account @dualipaverified on Instagram.

The lawsuit argues that consumers were misled into thinking Dua Lipa endorsed the TVs. As evidence, it points to social media posts like one person saying they bought a TV simply because of the packaging, and another stating they’d purchase it because of Dua Lipa’s image on the box.

Lipa is requesting a jury trial and a court order preventing Samsung from continuing to use the packaging in question. They are also seeking at least $15 million in compensation, all profits Samsung made from products using the packaging, and additional punitive damages as punishment.

Samsung may have a case

The picture shows a television displaying Dua Lipa’s photo, appearing as if it’s a broadcast. This is a typical technique TV companies use to showcase how good their picture quality is.

As a gamer, I’ve been following this case, and it seems like some legal experts are wondering if the way everything played out actually hurts the big claims – the ones about falsely implying endorsement and using someone’s likeness without permission, which are what’s driving that $15 million price tag. They’re saying even if proving copyright infringement is easy, this other stuff might be harder to win now.

Celebrities often fight for large sums of money when it comes to protecting their image or getting paid for their work. A recent example is K-Pop star Park Bom, who sued YG Entertainment in October 2025, asking for $4.5 quadrillion in back pay – an amount larger than South Korea’s entire yearly economic output.
