Netflix shuts down Matt Damon’s claim it repeats plot for viewers on their phones

Netflix has responded to criticism from Matt Damon and Conan O’Brien, who suggested the streaming service simplifies its content for viewers who aren’t fully paying attention.

I was reading about Matt Damon promoting his new movie, ‘The Rip,’ and he mentioned something really interesting about how movies are being made now. Apparently, filmmakers are starting to repeat key plot points in the dialogue three or four times! He said it’s because, let’s be honest, a lot of us are glued to our phones while we watch, and they want to make sure we don’t miss anything important.

During his hosting gig at the Oscars on Sunday, Conan O’Brien joked about how movie studios are now asking filmmakers to repeat key plot points. He said this is because audiences are often distracted by their phones and aren’t fully paying attention to the film.

O’Brien and Sterling K. Brown playfully reenacted a scene from Casablanca, repeatedly summarizing the storyline. Apparently, Netflix is concerned about its increasing reputation for shows with confusing plots.

Netflix boss says “we don’t repeat our plot”

At a press conference on Wednesday, March 18th, Dan Lin, who leads Netflix’s film division, stated that a previously discussed idea or rule doesn’t exist, according to Deadline.

Lin explained that everyone on the team found the Oscars joke funny, but it doesn’t reflect how they work. They pride themselves on original storylines and avoid repeating plots in their films and TV shows, so the comment surprised them. Their main goal is always to create high-quality entertainment.

Netflix’s head of content, Bela Bajaria, strongly disagreed with the idea that the company would give creators poor feedback and have them simply accept it, calling the suggestion ‘offensive’ to those filmmakers and creatives.

Bajaria also noted that viewers are very engaged and perceptive, and they quickly notice everything, so we respect their intelligence.
