Starting in 2023, Netflix has been broadcasting live events like reality show reunions, wrestling matches, and awards ceremonies. Now, they’re pushing things to the extreme with a truly dangerous live broadcast. They’ve teamed up with Alex Honnold – famous for his ropeless climb in the documentary Free Solo – to have him climb the Taipei 101 skyscraper, live on television. Netflix promises “no ropes, no safety net, and no second takes,” and it’s safe to say there will be plenty of suspense! The Taipei 101 is 508 meters tall, making it a shorter climb than some of Honnold’s previous ascents. Emily Harrington, Mark Rober, Seth Rollins, and Pete Woods will provide expert commentary during the event.
As a climbing fan, I think audiences are going to be seriously on the edge of their seats watching this! I imagine a lot of people will feel a bit uneasy, and that’s understandable, but I really hope viewers also get a sense of the pure joy I feel when I climb. I want them to appreciate the beauty of the scenery and the whole experience – it’s so much more than just extreme sports. You might know me from Free Solo, the documentary about my free solo climbing, and while I usually climb natural rock formations, I couldn’t pass up the chance to climb a building. It’s incredibly rare to get permission to do something like this, and when you do, you have to take it! It’s one of those ‘seize the moment’ situations – you gotta jump when the opportunity presents itself.
Elle Duncan will host the show, which premieres on Netflix Friday, January 23rd at 8 P.M. Eastern Time.
