Neon Genesis Evangelion Creator Reveals Gundam Brought Him Back To Anime With Franchise’s Co-Creator

Hideaki Anno, famously recognized for his work on “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” often locked in a battle with “Mobile Suit Gundam” for supremacy in the realm of giant robot anime. It came as quite a shock when it was revealed that Anno would pen the next installment of the enduring “Gundam GQuuuuuuX” series. In a recent conversation, Anno and “Gundam” director Yoshikazu Yasuhiko discussed the mech franchise, with Anno admitting that the “Gundam” franchise was what lured him back to animation.

The encounter between these two renowned mech designers was initiated by an exhibition celebrating Yasuhiko’s contributions to the anime world, titled “Yasuhiko Yoshikazu, The Artist.” Anno quickly paid tribute to the Gundam director, acknowledging his role in launching the franchise and inspiring Hideaki’s animation career. He stated, “It was Yasuhiko’s original drawings in a book accompanying the movie version of Mobile Suit Gundam that ignited my desire to work in the animation industry. I thought, ‘I want to be an animator.’ In this sense, Yasuhiko is the one who sparked my interest in animation.

Anno’s Anime Return

Hideaki Anno elaborated on how both “Gundam” and “Space Battleship Yamato” kept him involved in the world of anime. He stated, “My childhood experiences weren’t particularly special. Many kids were watching similar things, but I enjoyed it more than most. However, if I hadn’t watched ‘Space Battleship Yamato’, I likely wouldn’t have continued watching anime and wouldn’t be doing this job today. Even after ‘Yamato’ ended, life in the countryside was challenging for those without a university degree or civil service position. Just when I was questioning my future, ‘Mobile Suit Gundam’ rekindled my interest in anime. During my wandering period, I came to appreciate anime more, which allowed me to stay committed to it. It was Yasuhiko’s original artwork that drew me back to anime. So, in a way, I blame Yasuhiko for the path my career has taken (laughs). He should take responsibility.

The GQuuuuuuX Story

In contrast to Evangelion, the new Mobile Suit anime, Gundam GQuuuuuuX, has been generating a lot of buzz for the franchise lately. Unlike Anno’s original storyline, this spin-off explores an alternate reality where Char from Zeon pilots the Gundam. As a result of this change, Zeon emerges victorious in the conflict, and the recent episodes depict a universe distinctly different from the one fans of Gundam initially encountered. With the mech franchise experiencing renewed popularity, there’s excitement about what other surprises await us in GQuuuuuuX.
