NBC is beginning to finalize its plans for the 2026-2027 television season, and the “Law & Order” franchise is a key part of those plans. After one show was recently canceled, focus has shifted to the most consistently popular program within the “Law & Order” brand.
NBC has renewed Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for a 28th season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This means Olivia Benson and her team will be back for another year, and the show will continue its run as the longest-running live-action primetime drama series in American television history. The renewal was announced on April 16th.
While the announcement comes at an interesting time, the renewal of SVU isn’t a huge shock. Reports suggest NBC actually committed to two more seasons (27 and 28) last year, but only now is the second season becoming widely known. So, this current renewal feels like both a new announcement for fans and confirmation that the network has always considered SVU a valuable, ongoing series.
The twenty-eighth season of the show is planned to premiere during the 2026-2027 television season, most likely in the fall. Fortunately, stars Mariska Hargitay and Ice-T will both be returning, offering a rare level of consistency for a show that’s been on the air for so long. Hargitay will continue to play the iconic Captain Olivia Benson, and Ice-T’s character, Sergeant Odafin “Fin” Tutuola, will maintain a strong connection to the show’s original years.
The show also benefits from consistent leadership. Michele Fazekas, who made history as the first female showrunner starting with Season 27, is likely to continue in that role for Season 28. After so many seasons, it’s crucial for a show to maintain a consistent creative vision, just as important as keeping the same actors, especially when networks want established shows to still feel fresh and relevant.

While Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has been renewed, the future of the Law & Order franchise is complex. Law & Order: Organized Crime, starring Christopher Meloni, has been canceled after five seasons, meaning Elliot Stabler’s return to the series in 2021 has come to an end. Meanwhile, the original Law & Order series hasn’t been officially renewed yet and its fate is still uncertain as NBC plans its upcoming schedule.
This means SVU remains a stable force within the Law & Order universe, which is currently undergoing other changes. Fans can rest assured that the show isn’t ending anytime soon, as NBC continues to believe in its enduring popularity. New episodes of Season 27 are airing Thursdays at 9/8c, and the season will conclude on May 14, 2026.
