A musician with Parkinson’s disease turned to artificial intelligence to complete his album, as the condition made it difficult for him to play guitar.
Samuel Smith is a singer-songwriter based in London. In 2020, he received a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, a condition that affects the nervous system and causes movement problems like shaking and stiffness.
Smith’s illness has severely impacted his ability to play guitar. To create one song on his new album, ‘The Art of Letting Go’, he collaborated with artificial intelligence.
How the AI helped finish the album
To create an instrumental track called ‘Horizon’ for the album, Smith first hummed his ideas into AI music generators like Suno and Udio. It took around 150 tries and a lot of refinement, but by giving the AI specific instructions about the desired mood, instruments, and style, he finally produced a demo he liked.
In an interview with The Independent, Smith explained how the AI demo helps him communicate his musical ideas. He can use it to quickly share what he envisions with musicians, saying, ‘This is what I’m thinking and hearing,’ and get their feedback.

Grammy-nominated guitarist Julian Lage performed the finished song, joined by Smith, who was finally able to play for ten minutes, allowing him to record what he felt was the final expression of his guitar playing.
Smith explained that AI isn’t taking over their work, but rather helping them do more. They use AI as a tool to enhance their creative process, uploading lyrics and music, but always maintaining full creative control – the AI doesn’t actually create the content, it just assists with it.
Smith argues that his work proves AI can be a force for good. He’s now challenging AI companies to demonstrate this by partnering with healthcare or music therapy professionals and showcasing the positive impact of their technology.
