What really grabbed my attention in Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed was a seemingly small detail: a tuna can. If you’ve seen the first few episodes, you’ll understand why it stood out. Most shows portray dumpster dives as surprisingly comfortable landings, cushioned by what feels like soft materials. But that’s not realistic! In this show, when Paula (Tatiana Maslany) jumps into a dumpster while fleeing a crime scene, she immediately gets cut by a tuna can. It’s a shocking, darkly funny, and surprisingly authentic moment. That’s a perfect introduction to Apple TV’s new thriller – a show that takes everything enjoyable about the genre and delivers a truly thrilling experience.
Let’s quickly rewind to get everyone up to speed. Paula, played brilliantly by Tatiana Maslany, is a captivating but troubled woman. She’s locked in a difficult custody dispute with her ex, Karl (Jake Johnson, who seems to always end up in shows with questionable titles), who has a considerable financial advantage. To their eight-year-old daughter, Hazel, Paula is the playful parent – she lets Hazel eat ice cream for dinner, doesn’t mind a little swearing, enthusiastically joins in on TikTok trends, and even coaches her soccer team.
I’m completely hooked on this story! It starts with Paula, who seems to have it all together on the outside, but inside she’s really struggling. She finds a little escape with these online sessions with this cam boy, Trevor – he’s gorgeous, super understanding, and just really makes her feel good after her recent split and with everything she has going on. But things take a crazy turn when Trevor is attacked during a session and seems to be kidnapped, begging Paula to help. Then this really smart detective, Sofia Gonzalez, gets involved and thinks it’s all a scam. When Trevor starts contacting Paula’s friends and even calling her at work, she’s had enough. She uses her skills to investigate and track him down, only to discover a dead body and a whole lot of trouble. It’s a wild ride!
At the start of the third episode, Paula is still dealing with threats from the blackmailer, despite Trevor’s death. She’s also pressured by Karl and his wife, Mallory, who offer to financially support her if she and Hazel move to Boise so Mallory can pursue a job opportunity. Mallory acts like a classic cruel stepmother, and while she’s been a fairly simple villain so far, what happens to her later in the episode is unsettling.
Let’s talk about Murray Bartlett – he’s fantastic! He plays Dennis, Trevor’s boyfriend, and is incredibly compelling, even while portraying a potentially dangerous and unsettling character. Dennis is suspected of murdering Trevor, possibly even dismembering him, and he’s clearly good at covering his tracks. The detectives note Trevor’s apartment was professionally cleaned, suggesting a calculated killer. It’s frustrating – and sadly predictable – that the detectives immediately suspect the boyfriend without considering other possibilities. It always seems to be the boyfriend or husband, doesn’t it?
Okay, so Dennis really proved how seriously he takes things when he found Hazel’s pink cleats. Seriously, the lengths he went to find Paula were intense! He actually used a tiny pair of shoes to build a tracker. It started with a napkin and some gum to find their pizza place, then he searched for nearby elementary schools – which honestly felt a little creepy, right? He bought a bunch of those pink cleats, perfectly copied Hazel’s handwriting on them – even the ‘Hazel YABA’ part – hid a tracker in each pair, and then dropped them off at every school around! Talk about dedication…or maybe obsession? Poor Mallory, she just happened to be the one picking Hazel up that day, and I just know things aren’t going to go well for her.
Dennis receives the news of Trevor’s death while secretly following Mallory. He pretends to be upset on the phone, but his facial expressions are unconvincing – it’s clear he’s faking it. After Mallory leaves for a bike ride, Dennis ambushes her on the path. The scene highlights how vulnerable women are. He then shockingly suffocates her with a garbage bag and drags her into the woods. Realizing she isn’t the woman he saw at Trevor’s house, he robs her and leaves her for dead. Will Mallory survive this brutal attack? And more importantly, will we see justice served? Find out next week!
Although Paula is currently physically safe from Dennis, she’s falling apart emotionally. The person blackmailing her keeps calling and demanding money to keep her past as a cam-boy a secret. When the blackmailer asks for fifteen thousand dollars, Paula turns to the internet for help. She learns that wiring money provides information about the recipient, which makes sense. However, when Paula sends just one dollar, the person on the phone chillingly reveals that Trevor is going to die – a shocking statement since Trevor is already dead. The blackmailer is revealed to be a nervous young woman with beautiful hair, and the mystery is only getting more complicated.
Paula’s coworkers, Geri and Rudy, have noticed something is up with her and are understandably curious. She ends up telling them she was scammed by a cam boy, likely because they were going to find out eventually, and also because she needed to talk about it. Their supportive hug after she confesses is one of the most heartwarming moments of the show. I’m really enjoying these characters and the way they casually chat about everyday things – like bad sandwiches and even silly fantasies – amidst all the violence. It reminds me of Tarantino’s style. I hope Geri and Rudy get more involved in the action, and please, don’t let anything happen to them! I wouldn’t mind if another character, Mallory, had to make a sacrifice to keep them safe.
Wow, what a day for Paula! After everything she went through – dealing with that awful blackmailer and even avoiding Dennis – she still made it to Hazel’s soccer practice. But even there, Karl wouldn’t leave her alone, pressuring her about the Boise deal. I was so proud when she stood up to him! She explained she couldn’t take Hazel away from her dream, and that Hazel deserves a mom she can always count on. And honestly, she’s totally right. She proved she’ll be there for her daughter no matter what, showing up at practice after that ordeal! Seriously, Paula is the kind of mom I’d love to chat with at all the PTA meetings. I’m so glad we get to see more of her awesome mom skills throughout the season!
Okay, so the episode really messed with my head! Forget about whether Mallory lives or dies – the real mystery is Paula. It turns out she might be way more dangerous than we thought, and has a history with… well, dead people. When she finally gets through to Detective Gonzalez, bragging about how she tricked everyone with the wire transfer, the detective isn’t buying it at all. She straight-up asks Paula if this is the first time she’s been involved with a dead body, and that she doesn’t like secrets. Seriously, what has Paula done?! I need to know!

I’d love to hear what stood out to you in the first two episodes – share your favorite moments in the comments! For me, the scene with the tuna can was brilliant because it immediately showed us that anything could happen. But I especially loved the moment in episode two when Hazel told Paula she was a “badass.” It really showed Paula as a supportive and effective mother – the kind every child deserves. She wasn’t telling her daughter what to feel, but instead helping her recognize and embrace her own strength, which is something I really appreciated as a parent. It was a really powerful scene!
Tatiana Maslany is fantastic as a mother on the show, especially considering she doesn’t have children herself. It’s a testament to her skill as an actor – truly great performers can convincingly portray almost anything. Maslany is one of those great actors, and her compelling performance is the heart of what makes the series so captivating.
Apple TV+ is becoming known for developing compelling characters and shows that keep viewers hooked. This raises the question: is it becoming the new gold standard for quality television, like HBO once was? Let’s talk about it!
