Marvel Studios is planning a new movie that will take place before their upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film. Doomsday is projected to be Marvel’s largest movie yet, bringing back Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and uniting a huge cast of heroes from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe and older Marvel films. Before Doomsday arrives, Marvel will release a special film in theaters to build up to the fifth Avengers movie.
At CinemaCon 2026 in Las Vegas, Marvel Studios announced that the blockbuster film Avengers: Endgame from 2019 will return to theaters on September 25th. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo joined Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige to share the news, explaining that the re-release will include new footage designed to connect to the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, essentially serving as a prequel to it.
During a video call at the Sands Film Festival in St. Andrews, Scotland, Russo emphasized how crucially important it was to re-release the film, explaining that the added scenes take place within the context of the Doomsday storyline.
We’re definitely bringing the movie back to theaters, and this time it will include extra scenes from the ‘Doomsday’ storyline that we’ve added to ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

Russo explained this re-release is “an opportunity to connect” the two films, noting that chances like this are rare “because they’re expensive.” He hopes the re-release of Endgame will “enrich the story of Doomsday” by closely linking the two, and continuing the narrative for characters he and his brother have developed over many years.
We have a rare chance to connect the stories of ‘Endgame’ and ‘Doomsday’ in a fresh way. The success of the first movie allows us to release an updated version, which isn’t always possible due to the cost. Being able to expand on the ‘Doomsday’ narrative and continue the journeys of characters we’ve grown to love over the years is a truly special opportunity.
Joe Russo explained that the re-release serves as an important story connecting to the upcoming fifth Avengers film, and sets the stage for what audiences will see in December with “Avengers Doomsday.”
This is a first for the Marvel Cinematic Universe: a Marvel Studios film has been re-released with brand new footage not originally filmed. It’s also the first Marvel movie ever – including those outside the main MCU – to get two separate re-releases, each time adding more scenes.
Following its initial release on April 25, 2019, Endgame returned to theaters that summer and briefly became the highest-grossing film ever—a record later taken back by 2009’s Avatar after its own re-release. This re-release of Endgame featured additional, previously unseen footage, such as a scene of Natasha Romanoff encountering Smart Hulk in Wakanda.

Marvel has re-released movies with extra footage before. For example, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 came back to theaters in 2007 as Spider-Man 2.1 after first appearing in 2004. More recently, Sony Pictures gave Spider-Man: No Way Home a second theatrical run, calling it Spider-Man: No Way Home: The More Fun Stuff Version. This re-release included extra scenes and more conversation between the three Spider-Men before the movie’s climax.
What Will Avengers: Endgame Re-Release Include?

The re-release of Endgame probably won’t alter its most memorable scenes, but the filmmakers apparently shot extra footage during the making of Doomsday to add to the story. Many fans believe this new footage will feature Robert Downey Jr.’s character, Doom, observing various timelines as he develops his plan for multiversal domination or destruction.
The upcoming movie, Doomsday, will likely show Steve Rogers stepping down as Captain America, a key part of the story. Now that Sam Wilson is taking over as Captain America, Rogers will appear without a superhero identity. The trailer shown at CinemaCon hinted that he might fight alongside Thor again, wielding the Stormbreaker axe.
Since Endgame and Doomsday already share a lot of similarities, adding more connections between them could essentially merge the two stories. This could also give the original Avengers a stronger reason to be in Doomsday, particularly since we still don’t know which of them will appear.
