Marvel Studios Just Retired Its 7th MCU Hero

Life as a hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is incredibly demanding. It seems like the world is constantly facing new, massive threats, pushing even the bravest heroes to their breaking points. Even heroes who typically deal with smaller-scale problems have limits, and the recent series Daredevil: Born Again really pushed one hero to question whether they can continue fighting the good fight.

In the Disney+ series, Wilson Fisk has made it clear he opposes vigilantes. His Anti-Vigilante Task Force is used to target anyone who causes trouble for him, even people who work with him. This put Jack Duquesne, a prominent New York City socialite, in danger. Because Duquesne secretly operated as the hero The Swordsman, Fisk easily had him arrested and falsely accused of crimes.

Luckily, Duquesne had a friend watching his back – Daredevil. He helped Duquesne and several others escape from the Red Hook Port facility. Duquesne decided it was best to let Daredevil handle the fight. It’s understandable why someone without superpowers would choose to leave, as many heroes have reached the same decision.

MCU Characters That Left Being a Hero Behind

Captain America

Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, Steve Rogers was eager to join the war effort. He finally got his chance when an experiment gave him incredible strength, and he didn’t waste it. Alongside The Avengers, Captain America became a true hero, representing hope and goodness to the world.

The Sokovia Accords and the fight with Thanos took a real toll on Captain America. Once everything was resolved and the universe was safe, he gave his shield to Sam Wilson. This means Steve Rogers will need to find another shield when he appears in Avengers: Doomsday.

Iron Man

Tony Stark didn’t set out to be a hero; it happened unexpectedly. When he was captured by the Ten Rings in Iron Man, he was primarily focused on his own interests. But after losing Ho Yinsen and realizing the destructive power of his inventions, he had a change of heart. Returning to America, Tony was determined to start a new chapter in his life.

Tony Stark, as Iron Man, saved the world on many occasions. However, the loss of Spider-Man during the battle on Titan deeply affected him, leading him to retire after the events leading up to Avengers: Endgame. Ultimately, when his fellow Avengers needed him most, he bravely gave his life to defeat Thanos.

Hawkeye

In The Avengers, Hawkeye seemed hesitant to fully commit to being a superhero. It was later revealed he had a family he was eager to be with, and his battles against powerful enemies kept him from them. After the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, he tried to retire to a quiet life on his farm, but he eventually found himself drawn back into action.

In Captain America: Civil War, Hawkeye came to Captain America’s defense, but it landed him in prison. After escaping, he tragically lost his family when Thanos snapped his fingers, leading him to become the vigilante Ronin. Fortunately, Hawkeye gave Clint Barton the opportunity to mentor a successor, suggesting this time his retirement will be permanent.

Hank Pym

Although Iron Man is often considered the first hero of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that’s not actually the case. Hank Pym invented Pym Particles long before Tony Stark became Iron Man, and used them to become Ant-Man. He and his wife, Janet Van Dyne, were a fantastic crime-fighting duo until Janet vanished into the Quantum Realm.

After Janet disappeared, Hank largely stopped being a superhero. He focused on his research, only using his suit when he needed Scott Lang’s help with something. Thankfully, his plan to pass on the Ant-Man legacy worked – Scott continues to be a successful hero.

Star-Lord

Peter Quill likely would have been happy living a normal life in Missouri with his family. However, Yondu, hired by Peter’s father to take him away, steered him toward a life as a space outlaw. Using the skills he gained, Peter became Star-Lord and created the Guardians of the Galaxy with his close friends.

The Guardians of the Galaxy played a key role in defeating major threats like Ronan the Accuser, Ego, Thanos, and the High-Evolutionary. However, after everything, Peter Quill was exhausted and decided to step away from the team. He returned to Earth to reconnect with his grandfather and start a new chapter in his life.

Daredevil

When Matt Murdock was a child, a chemical accident took his sight. He trained himself to rely on his other senses, becoming a skilled hero dedicated to protecting his neighborhood, Hell’s Kitchen. He fought crime both on the streets and in the courtroom, working as a lawyer to defend those in need.

Matt Murdock and his close friend, Foggy Nelson, successfully launched a law firm, but their lives changed when Vanessa Fisk became involved. She targeted Foggy with the assassin Bullseye, and tragically, he died while trying to defend the people he cared about. Devastated by Foggy’s death, Matt abandoned his identity as Daredevil. However, he eventually returned to fighting crime as Daredevil, determined to carry on the memory of his friend.
