Lena Dunham Accuses Adam Driver of Being ‘Verbally Aggressive’ & Throwing a Chair on Girls Set

Lena Dunham, the creator of the show Girls, is sharing her life story in a new memoir called Famesick. In the book, she looks back on her experiences making the show and explores her complicated relationships, including one with actor Adam Driver, known for his role in Star Wars.

Lena Dunham played Hannah Horvath, a somewhat self-absorbed writer, in the popular TV series. Adam Driver played her complicated and often difficult boyfriend, also named Adam, on the show. In her memoir, Dunham claims their relationship off-screen mirrored the dynamic portrayed on television.

Lena Dunham Recalls Adam Driver Walking Out on Set

Lena Dunham says filming the first sex scene in Season 1 was difficult. She claims the planned choreography was disregarded and her co-star moved her around unexpectedly. Dunham was shocked and momentarily questioned if she’d lost control of the scene, hadn’t given clear direction, or if she would be replaced as director.

According to the creator, Driver left the room after seeing the first episode and didn’t return her calls for three weeks. She worried he was going to leave the show, but he apparently explained he simply dislikes watching himself on screen, which is why he abruptly left.

Lena Dunham said Adam Driver became upset with her for forgetting her lines during a rehearsal, and she claims he threw a chair at the wall near her. She also accused him of being verbally abusive at the time. Dunham recalled a frightening experience during a fight scene with Driver, describing him as intensely focused yet emotionally distant. She remembered practicing lines in her trailer when she suddenly couldn’t recall them, even though she had written and known them just moments before.

When I tried to speak, I could only stammer. Finally, Adam, frustrated, yelled, “Say something!” and threw a chair against the wall beside me. He continued, “Wake up! I’m tired of just watching you stand there.”
