Legal YouTubers demand more prison time for Johnny Somali after “light” 6 month sentence

Many content creators, such as Legal Mindset, think Johnny Somali’s prison sentence is too short now that he’s been convicted on all counts.

After a lengthy legal battle, streamer Johnny Somali, whose real name is Ramsey Khalid Ismael, was sentenced to six months and 20 days in a South Korean prison. He was convicted on all charges, including creating deepfake videos of other streamers.

Somali argued the law was unjust, and his mother pleaded with the court for a lighter sentence. Although he received a six-month sentence, prosecutors asked the judge to impose a three-year prison term with hard labor, and to require him to register as a sex offender.

Several content creators who have closely followed this case, such as LegalMindset, were present at the sentencing and feel Ismael’s punishment should have been more severe.

LegalMindset wants prosecutors to appeal Johnny Somali ruling

LegalMindset pointed out that Somali has a week to challenge the decision, and reminded everyone that the streamer had previously said he wouldn’t serve any jail time.

He expressed satisfaction that Johnny Somali was proven wrong after confidently stating he wouldn’t serve any jail time. However, he believes the sentence – six months of labor and an additional 20 days in detention – is too lenient. He feels a minimum of two years, or preferably the three years recommended by the prosecutor, would have been a more fitting punishment, and hopes the prosecutor will appeal the decision. He shared this opinion on X.

Reporting on the Johnny Somali trial, from the initial hearings through to the sentencing, was both insightful and a truly remarkable experience. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone on the Somali Conviction Team who worked hard to secure a jail sentence. I’m pleased we were able to demonstrate the falsity of Johnny Somali’s claim that…

We believed a prison sentence of two to three years would be just for him. While Johnny Somali claimed he’d avoid jail entirely, we’re pleased that he ultimately received some time behind bars.

“He was counting on a suspended sentence,” the legal creator told Korean news outlets.

After the Johnny Somali (Ramsey Khalid Ismael) trial, we shared our views with Korean media. We hope this will influence the prosecutor to appeal the decision and seek a harsher sentence, especially now that they’ve heard our perspective through a Korean-language source.

YouTuber Kangmin Lee also mentioned that the streamer could face serious consequences in Korea, potentially being jailed alongside people who are offended by Johnny Somali’s actions.

He stated he hoped the distress he caused to Koreans and the disruption he created were worth the consequences of his actions, including the hard labor and imprisonment. However, he expressed a desire for the prosecutor to appeal the sentence, believing six months was insufficient and advocating for the harshest possible penalty.

I witnessed the verdict in Johnny Somali’s case. As soon as he entered the courtroom, his eyes were vacant and showed no life. He didn’t engage in any provocative behavior towards the media or those documenting the proceedings – he wouldn’t even make eye contact. It was clear he knew he was facing a negative outcome. He was so desperate, in fact, that he resorted to lying about…

The streamer can still appeal the decision, but he must do so before the end of April. We’ll need to wait and see if he does and what the outcome will be.
