As an experienced blockchain analyst, I’m excited about StarkWare’s latest announcement regarding Kakarot, their upcoming zkEVM solution for the Ethereum infrastructure. This development is significant because it will make Starknet more accessible to a broader range of developers who are accustomed to using Solidity, the most widely-used programming language for Ethereum smart contracts.
StarkWare, the pioneering company leading the development of layer-2 blockchain Starknet, announced its plans for creating a zero-knowledge rollup compatible with Ethereum‘s existing infrastructure on Wednesday. This innovative setup, referred to as zkEVM in the community, will allow Ethereum users to enjoy the benefits of StarkWare’s zero-knowledge technology without having to switch blockchains entirely.
The zkEVM, known as Kakarot and currently being tested, can be accessed through the Starknet Stack – a collection of user-friendly software tools that enable developers to create their own tailor-made application-specific chains with ease.
While Starknet currently utilizes its unique zero-knowledge virtual machine (zkVM) through the use of Cairo programming language, the introduction of zkEVM will allow developers to write smart contracts using Solidity – the widely adopted language for Ethereum-based projects. Consequently, Starknet becomes more inviting to a wider range of builders.
As a researcher studying the latest developments in the blockchain industry, I’ve come across an intriguing update regarding Kakarot. According to a press release obtained by CoinDesk, Kakarot is currently undergoing a “public whitelist” phase. This implies that only a limited number of developers have been granted access to test the Kakarot zkEVM prior to its mainnet launch. This approach allows for thorough examination and evaluation of new protocol modifications before they are implemented on the live network.
The CEO of StarkWare, Eli Ben-Sasson, expressed his enthusiasm to CoinDesk about Starknet’s progress, stating, “Starknet’s advancement and maturity are evident in this development.” Setting itself apart from other networks with its use of the potent Cairo language instead of Solidity, Starknet bravely chose a distinct path. Simultaneously, the desire for zkEVM among developers is acknowledged, making this announcement beneficial for the network.
StarkWare has revealed plans to launch a new cryptographic prover named “Stwo.”
