Following the release of her first film, The Chronology of Water, she’s already planning another movie, and is taking a unique approach to filmmaking. In a recent interview, she revealed that directing has always been a passion of hers. The Chronology of Water premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2025.
Imogen Poots leads in The Chronology of Water, a film inspired by Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir. It tells the story of a woman coping with trauma and loss by expressing herself through art. Kristen Stewart, in addition to her role in The Twilight Saga, has appeared in films like Snow White and the Huntsman, Love Lies Bleeding, Charlie’s Angels, and Spencer – the latter earning her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kristen Stewart shared that she’s still fine-tuning her film, The Chronology of Water, even though it’s scheduled to be released on December 5th. She explained, “I’m so eager to start my next project that I need to stop obsessing over this one!”
Stewart plans to make her next film very simply, with a small team and minimal resources, preferring to avoid large-scale studio productions. She previously faced challenges securing funding for her film, The Chronology of Water, which was released through the independent distributor, The Forge.
Check out Stewart’s full comments from THR‘s feature about her next movie below:
I’m planning to make a movie in Los Angeles with a team of about ten friends. It’s a passion project – I’m not looking to profit from it, and we can film it with a zero budget in just four to six weeks. We’ll be shooting at night, keeping it completely under the radar. And honestly, I welcome anyone who tries to stop us – we’re determined to make this happen!
Even with her current success, Stewart might still need a standard movie distributor to get her film seen by a wider audience. It’s a promising project, and fans hope her packed acting schedule won’t prevent her from focusing on it. She’s already committed to a new vampire film, Flesh of the Gods, where she’ll be acting alongside Oscar Isaac and Elizabeth Olsen, both known for their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Stewart recently told The Hollywood Reporter about her next television role, which will require six months of filming. She’ll be playing Sally Ride, the famous tennis player who became an astronaut, in the upcoming Amazon miniseries The Challenger. “I’m cautiously optimistic about how it will go,” she said, adding with a laugh, “The people involved seem normal, but I’m a little nervous about being back on a large-scale production set.”
Kristen Stewart is continuing to establish herself as a unique creative force after spending years known for her role in the popular Twilight series, which wasn’t critically praised. Successfully completing a smaller, independent film could significantly boost her career.
