Mel Brooks, who created and starred in the original Spaceballs, has announced that filming for the sequel, Spaceballs 2, is complete! The movie is now moving into editing and other post-production work, and is scheduled to be released in 2027. The new film will bring back much of the original cast for another funny parody of Star Wars and the science fiction genre.
I just saw a post from Gad on Instagram that has me incredibly excited! He shared a picture – it looks like the control panel from a spaceship, complete with a lever for ‘Ludicrous Speed’ – and announced he’s finally finished his passion project. Apparently, this has been years in the making, and the best part? He got to collaborate with the legendary Mel Brooks, who directed and wrote the original back in ’87! Talk about a dream come true – and a promising sign for what’s to come.
I still can’t believe we finished! It felt like we were moving at ludicrous speed, but that’s a wrap on #Spaceballs2. Three years ago, I pitched a movie idea to Mel Brooks that had been in the works for forty years, and he actually said yes! Even more amazingly, we actually made the movie. This has been the most creatively fulfilling experience of my life, and I’m so excited to share it with everyone.
‘Spaceballs 2’ Is Scheduled for Release in 2027
A year of editing might seem lengthy, but it’s understandable considering the scope of the film. The cast features many well-known actors, which likely meant a complicated scheduling process. They probably filmed a year prior to ensure everyone could participate without conflicting with other projects.
While sharing news about the Spaceballs 2 update, Gad took a moment to thank everyone who worked on the project. This included not only the actors, but also the behind-the-scenes technical crew who helped make it happen. Gad praised director Josh Greenbaum, saying, “I want to thank our incredible team, led by one of the best directors I’ve ever worked with.” He then continued his message with:
I want to give a huge thank you to the incredible cast of this film: Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, Carrie Gammage, Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman, George Wyner, Mel Brooks, and the fantastic Rick Moranis – it’s been too long! They all delivered amazing performances.
I want to give a special thanks to my co-writers, @cubanmissiledh and @benjisamit, and my producing partners: @jebbrody, @kevinsalter1, @imagineentertainment, and @merimsadam. I’m also incredibly grateful for my partner, @taylouise66, and my fantastic assistant, @insertwilliamhere.
We’d like to thank our fantastic partners at Amazon MGM Studios for believing in us to revisit and continue the story of this beloved film after all these years. And a huge thank you to Mel Brooks, the brilliant creator of Spaceballs, who sparked my lifelong passion for comedy when I was just five years old.
