A classic Alfred Hitchcock story is getting a new life as a TV series. Instead of a single movie, this version will be longer and explore the story in more detail.
Alfred Hitchcock’s classic horror film, The Birds, first came out in 1963 and remains a widely recognized movie of that time. Now, 63 years later, it’s being reimagined as a limited series. The project is currently being offered to different streaming services and television networks. Heyday Television and Universal International Studios, a company related to the original film’s producer, Universal Pictures, are working together to create the new series.
Sarah Snook Leads the Cast of the Reboot
Sarah Snook, the Emmy-winning star of Succession and All Her Fault, will lead the cast of a new series. Tom Spezialy, known for his work on The Leftovers and Watchmen, is writing and will also executive produce alongside David Heyman (Heyday TV) and Jennifer Gabler Rawlings (Omni Artists). This reboot of The Birds updates Hitchcock’s classic story for today, setting it in Alaska—Spezialy’s home state—and centers around a murder mystery. The series will feature new characters and is led by Myra Massey, played by Snook.
Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 film, The Birds, draws inspiration from a story by Daphne du Maurier. The movie depicts a terrifying scenario where birds attack the residents of a California town. It received an Academy Award nomination for its special effects, and star Tippi Hedron won a Golden Globe for her acting. Today, The Birds is celebrated as a classic and one of the most important horror films of all time.
The Birds Reboot Puts a Modern Spin on the Story
The new series follows Myra Massey (Snook), a traveling judge who returns to her remote Alaskan hometown to oversee what she expects to be a straightforward death investigation. However, she quickly discovers a friend’s body, riddled with bullets. As Myra investigates, stepping outside her judicial role, the environment itself becomes dangerous, with swarms of attacking birds. Now, she’s not only trying to solve a murder, but also struggling to survive in a place where danger comes from all sides – both on the ground and in the air.
This new version of the story significantly changes the character of the female lead. In the original, Tippi Hedren’s Melanie Daniels was largely portrayed as someone who needed rescuing. However, Anya Taylor-Joy’s Myra Massey will be self-reliant, as she won’t have anyone coming to save her. This update, along with a modern setting, gives the story a fresh, contemporary feel.
Sue Gibbs, Head of Development at Heyday Television, explained at SXSW last year that the project is drawing its inspiration directly from Daphne du Maurier’s original story. She also mentioned the story’s core themes feel particularly relevant today, especially considering the current focus on climate change.
A release date for the remake of The Birds hasn’t been announced yet. The filmmakers are currently looking for a streaming service or television network to distribute it.
