With Godzilla Minus One, the iconic monster returned to his terrifying roots, evoking the same sense of dread and fear he inspired in his original appearance. This Godzilla isn’t just a monster; he’s a force of nature driven by revenge against those who caused his suffering and transformation, making him a powerful symbol of the devastation caused by nuclear weapons. Notably, this version is about the same height as the original – around 50 meters (164 feet) – allowing him to dramatically loom over 1950s Tokyo.
The first trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero briefly shows the reborn Godzilla that will once again threaten Japan, two years after being defeated in Minus One. The trailer appears to feature two distinct versions of Godzilla – or possibly two separate Godzillas, rather than a different monster – one of which is a more menacing form with spiky shoulders. The other looks similar to the Godzilla from Minus One, but is much larger, towering over the Statue of Liberty in the trailer’s closing scene. While its exact size hasn’t been confirmed, we can use details from the trailer to guess how much bigger this new Godzilla is.
Godzilla Has at Least Doubled in Size for ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’

To get an idea of how big Godzilla is in the new trailer as he nears New York City, fans can compare him to the Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty, including its base, is about 305 feet (93 meters) tall. However, because the trailer shows Godzilla from a low angle, it’s hard to accurately estimate his height.
As a lifelong Godzilla fan, I’ve been pouring over the new trailer, and it’s becoming pretty clear just how much bigger he’s gotten! Comparing him to the Statue of Liberty, his head is way above her crown – meaning he’s easily over 305 feet tall. Considering he’s probably standing in relatively shallow water near the island (maybe 10-15 feet deep), that puts his new height at least double what we saw in Godzilla Minus One. Taking everything into account – the trailer’s perspective, the context clues, and a little educated guessing – I’d estimate he’s somewhere between 340 and 400 feet tall now. It’s incredible!
Toho’s New Godzilla Now Rivals Legendary’s Monsterverse Godzilla in Size

Toho and Legendary Pictures have been in a friendly competition to make Godzilla bigger and bigger on screen. Legendary’s 2014 Godzilla was the tallest version yet, but Toho responded with an even larger Godzilla in 2016’s Shin Godzilla. Legendary then increased Godzilla’s size again in 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. While Godzilla Minus One featured a smaller Godzilla, it now appears Toho is making the monster comparable in size to Legendary’s version.

Some fans think the giant Godzilla appearing in New York might be a dream, similar to what happened in Minus One. But Toho, the studio behind Godzilla, has often shown Godzilla changing and growing throughout a film – like in Shin Godzilla, where he went through five different stages. The recent teaser for Godzilla Minus Zero suggests this could be happening again, with Godzilla dramatically increasing in size and taking on multiple forms.
