Guy Ritchie’s latest detective series is proving very popular on Prime Video, and has actually taken the place of the previously announced Sherlock Holmes 3. Ritchie has become a highly successful director known for his dynamic action, striking visuals, and unique storytelling. While his films are now considered classics, he’s also made a significant impact on television.
Guy Ritchie’s recent television work includes the 2024 show The Gentlemen, a continuation of his 2019 film, and MobLand, where he served as an executive producer and directed two episodes. He also recently achieved success with Young Sherlock, a Victorian-era series inspired by Andrew Lane’s books, featuring a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin.
The series Young Sherlock explores the early life of the iconic detective, offering a fresh perspective on his character. Produced by Guy Ritchie, who directed the first two episodes, the show quickly became a hit on Prime Video, staying at the top of their Top 10 list for an extended period. Young Sherlock’s success has led to a second season, and it’s now taken priority over Ritchie’s previously announced Sherlock Holmes 3, which has faced significant development challenges.
Young Sherlock Perfectly Fits The World Of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes 3
The series Young Sherlock tells the story of Sherlock Holmes before he became the world-famous detective. It begins with Holmes being falsely accused of murdering a professor at Oxford University. Having recently been released from prison for petty theft, Holmes works as a scout at the university. While there, he encounters James Moriarty, a remarkably intelligent student who matches Holmes’s own brilliance. Together, they investigate the murder to prove Holmes’s innocence and uncover the true killer.
The investigation quickly reveals a huge, dangerous conspiracy and unsettling truths about the Holmes family. Though not directly connected to Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes films, Young Sherlock feels like a natural prequel. The movie delves into Holmes’ initial case, but also explores his family relationships and his complex history with Moriarty—including how they first met, their early collaboration, and the beginnings of Moriarty’s descent into villainy.
The first season of Young Sherlock concluded in a way that strongly suggests exciting storylines for a second season, potentially focusing on the Holmes family adjusting to life after discovering Silas’s secrets, and on Moriarty’s descent into villainy. Young Sherlock appears to have a more promising future than the Sherlock Holmes films directed by Ritchie, especially since the third film is stalled in development. The show now effectively takes its place, making a new movie seem less and less likely.
Do We Still Need Sherlock Holmes 3?
Guy Ritchie first brought his vision of Sherlock Holmes to the big screen in 2009 with the film Sherlock Holmes, and followed it up with Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in 2011. The second movie seemed to end with Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) dying after a battle with Moriarty (Jared Harris) at Reichenbach Falls. However, a final scene showed that Holmes actually survived and was secretly hiding at his friend Watson’s (Jude Law) studio.
The second movie ended in a way that clearly set up a third installment, but that third movie has been stuck in development for over a decade. While a first draft was mentioned as early as 2011, it wasn’t until 2014 that active development was officially confirmed. Then, in 2019, the original director stepped down and was replaced. Since then, the project has faced numerous delays due to issues like the pandemic and scheduling problems, and currently, it doesn’t seem likely to move forward.
It’s been fifteen years since A Game of Shadows was released, and unfortunately, a third Sherlock Holmes movie is likely no longer going to happen. Young Sherlock is now taking its place, offering a similar Victorian atmosphere and feel to the previous films. Importantly, the series allows for a much deeper exploration of the characters and their backstories, making it a great companion to Guy Ritchie’s movies.
