While still a scary show at its core, From demonstrated its depth in the eighth episode of season four, ‘Heavy Is the Head.’ The episode explored the full range of emotions the town has inflicted on its characters, making them feel more layered and believable.
The episode “Heavy Is the Head” delved into the deeply painful experiences of Victor’s childhood in the Township, creating one of the most heartbreaking storylines the show has ever presented. The episode uniquely focused on the emotional toll these experiences took on him, reinforcing the idea that From is fundamentally a story about inner resilience and mental fortitude, not just physical survival.
However, “Heavy is the Head” was also arguably the funniest episode of From so far. The emotional weight of Jade revealing his plan to destroy the bottle tree and save the children’s bones was immediately undercut by Boyd’s blunt comment, “Landscaping is not a plan.” This unexpected line transformed what could have been a very dramatic scene into a genuinely funny one.
Ellis, increasingly frustrated and feeling helpless about Fatima’s strange condition and powers, finally spoke his mind. After Kristi finished her examination and stated she “saw nothing,” Ellis responded sharply, “With all due respect, you didn’t see the baby either.”
The episode used cleverly timed humor to help us get to know the characters in From better, and to emphasize that the show isn’t just about escaping a terrifying situation – it’s about something deeper.
From’s Comedic Timing Solidifies The Show’s Self-Awareness
Now that the characters in From are openly discussing the strange things happening in the town, the show is running into some problems. While it’s good Sophia is finally hearing everything, having the characters explain their situation in detail could remind viewers just how complicated – and sometimes ridiculous – the plot has become.
When characters share funny moments or react comically, From seems to acknowledge how strange things are, almost as if the show itself is commenting on its own absurdity. The episode “Heavy Is the Head” clearly showed the show embracing its unique and unpredictable world. Now, it wouldn’t make sense for Kristi to expect her patients to behave normally.
The show found a great rhythm by delivering honest truths with humor. This allowed the characters to develop and the story to move forward without becoming overly dramatic. Instead of questioning each other or what’s happening, the characters are simply annoyed by their situation, and the way they voice those frustrations actually makes them more interesting and relatable.
Levity Gives From’s Characters New Life
In “Heavy Is the Head,” the show offered a funnier take on some of the town’s residents, and we saw different sides of them. Usually, Jade provides most of the humor, but in this episode, she was surprisingly sincere and focused. It was Boyd who jokingly dismissed her plan as simply “landscaping.” This unexpected switch was a welcome change and made both characters more interesting.
Even the episode’s sadder storyline – Victor getting Ethan ready to survive on his own – had some surprisingly lighthearted moments. Throughout the show, Tabitha and Jim were very overprotective of their children, rarely letting Julie or Ethan do anything independently or out of their sight.
Okay, so in “Heavy Is the Head,” I noticed Tabitha really took a backseat, letting Ethan drive things for the most part. Both Ethan and Victor were clearly determined, but Tabitha felt more like a mom just trying to support her kid’s, frankly, strange choices. And when she did finally intervene, it wasn’t with yelling or accusations. It was genuinely heartbreaking to watch, and what really struck me was that she didn’t pull Ethan away – she brought Victor into a moment of understanding and healing, which was a beautiful touch.
As the characters directly confront the strange things happening in the show, clever humor could be what sets it apart.
