‘Fargo’: FX’s 5-Part Crime Thriller Has One of the Best TV Casts of All Time

For years, HBO’s been known as the network for sophisticated viewers, but honestly, FX has been delivering just as much quality programming. They’ve given us some really compelling shows, from the over-the-top thrills of American Horror Story to the gritty drama of Sons of Anarchy. But for me, nothing they’ve done quite reaches the heights of Fargo. This crime thriller, created by Noah Hawley and inspired by the fantastic Coen Brothers film, is just exceptional – a true standout in the anthology series format.

The TV show Fargo ran for five seasons and has been highly praised by critics, consistently earning scores above 80% on Rotten Tomatoes – with Season 2 actually achieving a perfect 100% despite being my personal least favorite. It’s definitely worth checking out, especially considering the show consistently attracts a fantastic cast of well-known actors. You might even recognize some of your favorites, which could influence how you view each season. Let’s take a closer look.

‘Fargo’ Is An All-Star Affair With Compelling Plots All Through

The first season of Fargo features Billy Bob Thornton as Lorne Malvo, a ruthless hitman. The season follows Malvo as he commits several murders throughout Minnesota while two police officers try to catch him. While Thornton has been great in shows like Goliath and Hearts Afire, many consider this to be his best performance – it even earned him an Emmy nomination. He’s joined by a talented cast including Bob Odenkirk, Martin Freeman, Keegan-Michael Key, and Jordan Peele.

The second season of this show centers around a couple desperately trying to hide a murder – the killing of a son from a powerful local crime family. This leads Minnesota State Trooper Lou Solverson to investigate, and quickly sparks a violent conflict between rival gangs. The season features strong performances from Jesse Plemons, Kirsten Dunst, Cristin Milioti, Jeffrey Donovan, Bokeem Woodbine, and Nick Offerman, with Plemons and Woodbine particularly standing out and receiving Emmy nominations for their roles.

Season 3 centers around a dangerous feud between a parole officer and a wealthy real estate developer, leading to a series of murders across Minnesota. A manipulative businessman adds to the turmoil, hoping to profit from the escalating conflict. Ewan McGregor plays two characters in this season, and the cast also includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead, David Thewlis, Michael Stuhlbarg, Shea Whigham, and Scoot McNairy.

Fans generally dislike Season 4, largely because Chris Rock’s portrayal of a mob boss didn’t resonate well. The season focuses on a conflict between a group of Black migrants escaping the Jim Crow South and the Italian Mafia in Kansas City. The cast includes Jessie Buckley, Ben Whishaw, Jason Schwartzman, Jack Huston, Salvatore Esposito, E’myri Crutchfield, Anji White, and Jeremie Harris, among others.

Jon Hamm, currently starring in the popular series Your Friends and Neighbors, plays the lead role in the final season. He portrays a sheriff in North Dakota who is secretly corrupt and abusive, and whose past catches up to him thanks to his ex-wife, played by Juno Temple. The season also features Jennifer Jason Leigh and Lamorne Morris.

‘Fargo’ Deserves Higher Praise Than It Gets

When you first watch Fargo, it’s surprising it isn’t more widely celebrated. It’s actually better than shows like Breaking Bad and The Wire. The series is a smart, casually violent crime thriller that happily stays true to the spirit of the original Coen Brothers film. It perfectly recreates the movie’s feel – the snowy landscapes, the quirky characters, the unexpected twists, and the unsettling way it portrays everyday life.

Over five seasons, the show’s creator, Noah Hawley (also known for his work on Alien: Earth), tells the story in a subtle and understated way—and he does it brilliantly. It’s almost a study in accepting the meaninglessness of life. Thankfully, he avoids turning the series into a commentary on America or filling it with unnecessary action and flashy special effects. The show feels authentic, like a drive through the state of Minnesota.

This captivating and highly praised series mostly unfolds on the quiet, isolated highways of rural Minnesota, with occasional scenes in Kansas and North Dakota. A key element is watching how the criminals and officers react to events – some are impulsive and panicked, while others remain surprisingly calm. The law enforcement characters are equally complex; some project unwavering control, while others seem lost and struggle to keep up. These officers often wander through scenes, interacting with incredibly well-developed supporting characters. The stories might take unexpected turns, but that’s intentional. Fargo is simply designed to be thoroughly entertaining – you won’t be bored, that’s a guarantee.
