Because of ongoing shortages of key computer parts like RAM and storage, it’s been difficult for hardware manufacturers to keep up with demand, and prices for consoles like the PlayStation 5 have gone up. Now, a former Nintendo sales executive is suggesting the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 might also become more expensive.
It’s understandable that consoles and gaming hardware are becoming more expensive. Manufacturing costs have risen because of shortages, so companies need to charge more to cover those costs. When you add in general inflation and increased tariffs, many experts believe the next Nintendo Switch, likely called the Switch 2, will also cost more.
On the Kit & Krysta podcast, a former Nintendo sales leader named Sean shared his belief that a price increase for the next Switch console is likely unavoidable.
Former Nintendo sales lead convinced they’ll “have” to increase price
Sean explained that hardware prices will likely increase in the future, but the company is trying to keep those increases as small as possible.
A good example of this is Nintendo’s strategy with digital games, which seems designed to soften the blow of rising hardware costs. Specifically, they’ve started pricing digital games lower than physical copies in the US, both to encourage more digital purchases and to reduce the need for expensive cartridge production.
Sean also pointed out that even if compromises are reached, he believes hardware costs will likely increase in the long run.
He told fans they might be able to avoid raising prices on consoles for a little while, thanks to sales of things like Nintendo merchandise. However, he cautioned that price increases are likely coming eventually.
This doesn’t necessarily mean Nintendo will raise prices, but a former sales leader believes external pressures might be pushing them in that direction. Nintendo hasn’t commented on potential price changes, so it’s still uncertain if one will happen.
