Every Great House Destroyed in Game of Thrones

This story takes place during a brutal civil war within the powerful Targaryen family, almost 200 years before the events you may already know. Some of the noble families featured in this prequel actually disappear before the start of the original series – like the Velaryons and Hightowers. However, other well-known houses, such as the Lannisters, Baratheons, and Starks, survive through all the conflict and hardship.

Throughout the wars and conflicts in Game of Thrones, many powerful families are wiped out or significantly weakened. While some noble houses like the Starks and Baratheons survive – though forever altered – others, such as the Tyrells and Karstarks, face complete destruction with no clear path forward.

House Clegane Was Doomed From The Start

House Clegane wasn’t officially a great house in Westeros, but they were loyal supporters of the powerful Lannister family. This loyalty earned them land and noble status. By the start of Game of Thrones, only two members of the Clegane family remained: Gregor and Sandor, both skilled knights.

The Clegane house was doomed to disappear because the brothers showed no interest in having children – knights weren’t even supposed to marry. After Gregor died and came back as a zombie, Sandor was the last living Clegane. Their final fight meant one of them would definitely kill the other, effectively ending their family line.

House Baelish Was Established and Fell in a Matter of Years

Petyr Baelish, or Littlefinger, was remarkable for building his reputation and wealth largely through his own efforts. Though he started with some advantages thanks to his father, he eventually became a ward of a prominent nobleman. This gave him access to a higher social class, which he cleverly used to his benefit. By skillfully manipulating situations and deceiving others, Petyr amassed enough power and riches to earn a noble title and a position of influence.

Since no other relatives of Littlefinger’s family are known, and they owned very little land, it’s likely the Baelish line ended with him. He built his power through lies and trickery, but ultimately, his reputation was destroyed by the same methods he used to create it.

The Umbers Were Wiped Out in the Final Season of Game of Thrones

House Umber used to support Eddard Stark, but after the Boltons seized Winterfell, Smalljon Umber switched sides. He then pledged loyalty to Ramsay Bolton and fought alongside him in the Battle of the Bastards. When Smalljon died in that battle – killed by Tormund – his young son, Ned, became the new head of House Umber.

During the last season of Game of Thrones, Ned Umber and everyone at Last Hearth were killed by the Night King’s army as they advanced south of the Wall. While the Umbers were already a declining family and probably wouldn’t have survived the White Walkers anyway, their history of switching sides in political conflicts weakened them and ultimately contributed to their downfall.

The Boltons Took Over the North and Destroyed Themselves

Roose Bolton and his son Ramsay were known for being ruthless. Though Roose never married and only had one illegitimate son, he began to think about ensuring his family’s future after taking control of Winterfell and becoming Warden of the North. However, his hesitation allowed Ramsay to seize power by murdering Roose, his new wife, and their baby son.

The downfall of House Bolton came about because of Ramsay’s ambition, cruelty, and self-interest. After he killed everyone else in the Bolton family, his name died with him when he lost the Battle of the Bastards. Both Ramsay and his father were irredeemable characters, and the end of their line felt like a just punishment for all the terrible things they had done.

The Karstarks Were Destroyed For Their Atrocities

When Robb Stark began fighting the Lannisters to avenge his father’s death, Rickard Karstark was one of his earliest supporters. But after losing all of his sons – the last of whom was killed by Jaime Lannister – Karstark became consumed by a desire for revenge. He took matters into his own hands, executing two young Lannister soldiers. Despite understanding this would likely make the Karstarks his enemies, Robb Stark ultimately had Karstark executed in retaliation.

Alys, the granddaughter of a Karstark, restored her family’s honor by pledging loyalty to Jon Snow when he became King in the North. Sadly, she died during the Long Night, marking the end of House Karstark. Though Rickard Karstark was initially hesitant, fueled by sadness and rage, the family was generally known for its honorable nature and strong support of the Starks.

The Greyjoys Could Never Overcome Their Worst Enemies — Themselves

During the sixth season, Lord Balon Greyjoy is killed by his brother, Euron. With only two surviving children – Theon, who cannot have heirs, and his daughter Yara – Euron seizes the chance to take control of the Iron Islands and become their ruler. But Euron’s overconfidence leads to his death in a fight with Jaime Lannister.

Yara goes back to the Iron Islands and stays there until the war is over. Theon makes a huge sacrifice to save Bran Stark with his life. While Yara lives through the conflict and eventually becomes ruler of the Iron Islands, she seems more focused on women and maintaining her authority than settling down with a family. Ultimately, with only one Greyjoy left, the family line effectively dies out by the series’ end.

House Martell Was Betrayed and Became a Forgotten Memory

During the wars that culminated in Bran Stark becoming King, House Martell suffered greatly. Following Oberyn Martell’s death in a fight with Gregor Clegane (The Mountain), his partner Ellaria Sand vowed revenge. When Prince Daran Martell hesitated to act, she killed him and his heir, creating chaos in Dorne as she and her daughters seized power and planned to oppose the Lannisters.

The leaders of Dorne fall due to their lack of action, and Ellaria Sand brings about her own downfall—and that of her children—by seeking revenge against Cersei Lannister. Though the Martell family isn’t entirely wiped out in Game of Thrones, with one member eventually becoming a claimant to the throne and helping choose Bran as king, the house suffers so much hardship that they become relatively unimportant to the main story.

House Tyrell Was Destroyed by The Lannisters

I always loved the Tyrells! They were such a powerful family, basically ruling over all the rich farmland in the south from their home in Highgarden. It was so tragic to see them fall during the war for the Iron Throne. Cersei Lannister was so scared of Margaery and the High Sparrow that she did something absolutely awful – she destroyed the Sept of Baelor with wildfire, and just… wiped out Lord Mace Tyrell, Margaery, and Loras all at once. It was a shocking moment, and honestly, a huge loss for Westeros.

Surprisingly, Olenna Tyrell is the last person left from her family. She decides to take her own life, but first admits to Jaime Lannister that she poisoned Joffrey Baratheon during his wedding. The end of the powerful Tyrell house shows just how much damage the struggle for control of Westeros has caused.

The Mormonts Fought Hard, But Perished for Their Ferocity

House Mormont features several popular characters from Game of Thrones. Jeor Mormont, the respected Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, leads with honor until those under his command betray him. His son, Jorah Mormont, is another standout character, dedicating himself to protecting Daenerys Targaryen until he dies.

The Battle of the Long Night was a terrible conflict fought to save the world. It cost many lives, including those of Jorah Mormont and Lyanna Mormont, the young leader of House Mormont. Just thirteen years old, Lady Lyanna bravely defended her house and the Starks, even managing to defeat a Wight Giant before falling in battle. House Mormont remained loyal and honorable until the very end, prioritizing their alliances despite facing destruction.

Daenerys Targaryen Burned Most of the Surviving Tarlys

Samwell Tarly is a close friend of Jon Snow who serves at the Wall. He comes from House Tarly, a noble family from the Reach. His father, Lord Randyll Tarly, forced him to join the Night’s Watch to remove him from the line of succession, passing the inheritance to Sam’s brother, Dickon. Beyond Sam and Dickon, the Tarly family doesn’t play a significant role in the events of Game of Thrones.

When Daenerys Targaryen invaded Westeros, House Tarly ended up on the losing side. They supported the Lannisters and fought against her at the Battle of the Goldroad. After Daenerys won, Randyll and Dickon Tarly refused to surrender, and she executed them with her dragon. While Samwell Tarly survived, his mother and sister’s fate remains uncertain, though likely grim given their allegiance. Because Sam became a maester – a position that prevents him from ruling or having heirs – House Tarly is almost certainly extinct.
