Evangelion Studio Revives an All-Time Classic Magical Girl Anime

As an ardent fan, I’m absolutely thrilled about the return of a timeless magical girl anime that once ruled our screens! The news might have come as a surprise this year, but it’s nothing short of delightful. You see, the original adaptation was a smash hit, and this new one, helmed by the team behind ‘Evangelion’, has all the ingredients to outshine its predecessor. It’s not just about the innovative vision they’re bringing to the table, but also because a leading studio is tackling the task of breathing life into it. To top it off, a tantalizing teaser has been unveiled, offering a glimpse into how the full anime series will look when it finally graces our screens.

According to the official statement from Studio Khara, who are known for productions like Neon Genesis Evangelion rebuild movies, Kaiju No. 8, Darling in the Franxx, and others, it has been confirmed at this year’s Japan Expo that they will be adapting the classic Sugar Sugar Rune manga. This franchise is marking its 20th anniversary this year, and to celebrate, a short titled Sugar Sugar Rune Les deux sorcières has already been released. This short acts as a prequel to the main storyline and was penned by the original creator. However, no release window or additional information about the full anime project has been provided yet.

Sugar Sugar Rune‘s Remake Will Look Stunning

In a magical realm, a contest is held to choose the next queen, as two young witches, Vanilla Mieux and Chocolat Meilleure, engage in a battle of charm in the mortal world. Their objective? To amass the most admiration from boys, with the winner taking the throne. Interestingly, these competitors are best friends and polar opposites: sweet-natured Vanilla and daring Chocolat, offspring of the current queen and her past adversary. They receive guidance from the pop star witch Rockin’ Robin, in addition to their animal companions, Blanca and Duke. However, trouble brews when enigmatic student Pierre, who resembles the ominous king Glace, focuses his attention on Chocolat. As perils escalate, the friends must preserve their bond and shield each other.

As an observer, I’ve noticed that the upcoming anime project, along with its accompanying short video, are both crafted in CGI. It seems quite probable that Yusuke Matsui, a skilled CG animation director at the studio, will lead this series, as he and producer Kohei Fujiwara have announced it. In addition to this thrilling anime adaptation, the cherished manga penned and illustrated by Moyoco Anno is getting a comprehensive 5-volume edition. This special edition will include fresh illustrations and bonus materials, with the first volume set for release on September 30, 2025. The 20th anniversary was commemorated in grand fashion, and there’s much to anticipate as we approach the rebirth of an iconic work.
