Escape From Tarkov On Steam Will Require You Buy It Again

Escape From Tarkov, the influential first-person shooter that made the ‘extraction’ style of gameplay popular, is now available on Steam, but there’s a catch: players who already own the game on Battlestate Games’ launcher will need to purchase it again to play through Steam.

Battlestate Games recently published a Steam FAQ to clarify how Escape From Tarkov will function on the platform. The FAQ details supported Steam features and explains how existing players can access the game through Steam.

If you already own Escape From Tarkov directly from Battlestate Games, you won’t be able to access it through Steam. To play on Steam, current owners will need to buy a Steam edition of the game.

If you already own Escape from Tarkov, you can connect your Battlestate Games account after purchasing it on Steam. This will give you access to the version of the game you previously owned, along with your profile and character progress. All players – both new and existing – will need a Battlestate account to play the game.

This is frustrating for players who already own the game. Many were hoping to connect their existing accounts to Steam and automatically get the Steam version, a method other game developers – like those behind Dark and Darker and Path of Exile 2 – have successfully used when letting players purchase directly from their websites.

Battlestate Games is making players pay to launch Escape From Tarkov on Steam, in addition to any previous purchases. While the Steam price isn’t known yet, the standard edition currently costs $50 on the official website. Because more expensive editions of the game are available – some costing as much as $250 – many players are unhappy with Battlestate Games essentially making existing owners buy the game again on Steam.

I was checking out the latest FAQ from Battlestate, and it sounds like Escape From Tarkov *will* have Steam achievements and let you play with your Steam friends, which is great! But unfortunately, it won’t be compatible with the Steam Deck, and we won’t be able to use Steam Workshop or Family Sharing features with the game. It’s a bit of a bummer about those last two, but at least we can still connect with friends on Steam!

After eight years in beta, Escape From Tarkov is officially launching on Steam November 15th with the release of its 1.0 update. While you can’t pre-order the game, you can add it to your Steam wishlist now. There won’t be an option to download the game before the official launch.
