Netflix’s Bridgerton has been a huge hit, known for its romance and willingness to show the more scandalous side of the Regency period. Now, the streaming service has a new potentially popular series in the works, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson – though Jeremy Allen White was originally considered for the role. Taylor-Johnson is a popular actor, often mentioned as a possible future James Bond, and the series is based on the work of an author known for writing captivating love stories.
The new limited series, Enigma Variations, is based on the novel of the same name by André Aciman, who also wrote Call Me by Your Name – the popular story that became a 2017 movie starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer. Like Call Me by Your Name, Enigma Variations uses the beautiful setting of Italy to enhance its romantic story. While some scenes will take place in Italy, the series will also be filmed in New England and New York.
Netflix describes the series:
Enigma Variations, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, follows a man whose life is reshaped by the passionate relationships he has over a decade. The film is a deeply personal yet expansive exploration of what it means to be a man, modern love, and sexuality. Ultimately, it asks a thought-provoking question: in a world full of possibilities, how will we know when we’ve found true connection?
Amanda Kate Shuman will lead the series as showrunner, bringing experience from shows like The Blacklist, Berlin Station, and The Wheel of Time. So far, no other actors have been confirmed for the cast, and a filming schedule hasn’t been released. This project is notable because it’s rare for Taylor-Johnson to appear in a TV series, as he hasn’t been a regular cast member since 2007, when he starred in Talk to Me and Nearly Famous.
For many years, especially before the 2000s, films and television often featured stories with both romantic and sensual elements, some of which were critically acclaimed and won awards. This type of mature content became less common later on, but the popularity of Fifty Shades of Grey – both the books and the movies – brought it back into the mainstream. It’s notable that Sam Taylor-Johnson, the wife of the director Aaron Taylor-Johnson, directed the first Fifty Shades of Grey film.
Over the past few years, movie and TV creators have become more comfortable with showing romance and even more intimate scenes. Bridgerton is a great example – it features much more explicit content than other popular romantic shows like Emily in Paris. This trend has really picked up recently, with shows like last year’s Heated Rivalry generating a lot of buzz, and the film The Housemaid, starring Sydney Sweeney, becoming a surprisingly big hit in 2025.
