I’m really getting into ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘! It’s about Ser Duncan the Tall and Prince Aegon Targaryen, and honestly, knowing it all builds towards a really sad event that happens fifty years after the first season is just… heartbreaking. It makes watching everything so much more impactful, knowing where it’s all headed.
Okay, so as a fan who’s read the books, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what was going on. But apparently, there’s still so much we don’t know! And Dexter Sol Ansell, who plays Egg, just dropped a huge spoiler in an interview – something that even people who’ve read all the books didn’t expect. Seriously, major spoilers ahead if you keep reading!
Sol Ansell and Peter Claffey, who play characters in the show, recently spoke with Decider about how much they knew about what would happen to their characters. They were also asked if they were familiar with ‘Summerhall,’ the devastating fire that destroyed the Targaryen family’s residence, killing several people, including Ser Duncan’s son, Egg. The prophecy featured in episode 3 alludes to this tragic event.
Most people think Egg caused the wildfires while attempting to hatch dragon eggs, but it was a disaster. Now, Sol Ansell has shared that there’s actually more to what happened.
Egg actor reveals Dunk’s fate after Summerhall
Sol Ansell mentioned they’re familiar with the story of Egg attempting to create dragons at Summerhall, which resulted in a large fire. They also confirmed, based on information from George R.R. Martin, that Dunk does survive, although Egg’s fate is still unknown.
Claffey winced and made a cutting motion with his hand, then said they weren’t sure what went wrong, but they just wanted to finish releasing Season 1 and then assess the situation.

This change is a big departure from the established stories, but it’s definitely possible Dunk could have lived. Westeros’ history is recorded by people within that world, meaning if Dunk did survive and get away, the scholars (Maesters) likely wouldn’t have ever found out about it.
The fate of Dunk after the events at Summerhall is also a mystery. Did he disguise himself and join the Night’s Watch? Did he leave Westeros entirely? Or is his connection to Brienne of Tarth somehow involved? George R.R. Martin has revealed that Dunk is an ancestor of Brienne’s, but the exact relationship remains unknown. Perhaps Dunk went into hiding on Tarth after Summerhall, leaving behind the shield that Brienne later finds.
This also leaves the door open to the possibility that Egg is still alive, and we may find out for sure in a future season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, in upcoming novellas, or in The Winds of Winter – whichever comes out first.
While you wait, you can learn about what we currently know regarding Season 3 of House of the Dragon, and also find out who the Blackfyres are.
