- Hackers used Drake’s X account to promote a fraudulent Token.
- The system uncovered the scam after it recorded $5M in transactions.
As a seasoned analyst with years of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of scams and fraudulent activities in the crypto space. However, the recent hacking incident involving Drake’s X account to promote the fraudulent Token $ANITA has taken the cake. It’s not just about the five million dollars in transactions that were recorded, but more about the sheer audacity of these scammers to leverage a celebrity’s influence in such a blatant manner.
As a crypto investor, I recently learned about an incident where hackers attempted to exploit Canadian rapper Drake’s X account. They advertised a memecoin called $ANITA, which was cleverly tied to Drake-Anita Max Wynn, an animated alter ego of the artist. The hackers claimed that this token was launched by Stake, a crypto betting platform rumored to have connections with Drake since 2022. However, it’s essential to verify such claims before making any investment decisions.
Individuals identified as hackers exploited Drake’s massive fanbase of over 39 million by posting messages promoting a memecoin associated with his “Anita Max Wynn Tour.” The coin’s name, a play on the gambling term “I need a max win,” was deliberately misleading to potential investors, creating confusion.
The fraudulent scheme drew significant interest; trade for $ANITA reached a staggering $5 million. However, the truth ultimately surfaced, causing traders to halt their activities. As reported by DexScreener, the token saw an immediate spike in activity following the posts, and X swiftly suspended the account pretending to be the project’s official page.
Celebrity Crypto Scams on the Rise
This is one among many emerging trends of using the famous X accounts for cryptocurrency scamming purposes. Besides this, other personalities like Cardi B, Doja Cat, and Metallica have experienced hacking incidents. This shows that famous accounts are also vulnerable to security breach attacks.
Lately, Drake’s name has been buzzing due to his actions within the digital currency world, notably his open support for Bitcoin. Yet, it is important to note that he has had his fair share of disputes too. Previously, there were accusations against him concerning a purported $2 million loss in a cryptocurrency exchange with an influential social media personality.
Despite the fact that the $ANITA token was initially launched by scammers, its short stint in public exposure underscores the significant impact social media can have, even when it’s promoting illegitimate activities. Cryptocurrency investors would be wise to recall this lesson, being cautious of sudden endorsements, particularly when questionable claims are unverified.
Utilizing the clout of celebrities remains a prevalent strategy among scammers, who often use hacked social media or email accounts to promote bogus crypto projects as genuine. It is essential for both investors and public figures to exercise increased caution in this evolving landscape of cryptocurrency deception.
