The recently announced anime remake of the Golden Frieza Saga is already clearer thanks to newly translated background information from the anime’s creators.
I’ve always wondered about something ever since the Resurrection ‘F’ movie came out in 2015. Why is Frieza already wearing his armor when he’s reborn? It’s a little odd because normally, when he reaches his Final Form, he doesn’t wear any armor. But when we first met him on Namek, he did wear something that looked a lot like the Saiyan Battle Armor. So it’s always been confusing to see him reappear in the Golden Frieza saga already wearing it.
What’s even more surprising is that the new anime remake isn’t fixing what seemed like a mistake, as shown in the latest previews. However, according to Tadayoshi Yamamuro, a character designer for Dragon Ball Z, a recently translated Japanese guide reveals this wasn’t an oversight at all – it was a deliberate choice.
DBZ Character Designer Reveals Frieza’s ‘Armor’ Was Never Actually Armor in the Golden Frieza Saga
According to information released with the Japanese film Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’, Frieza’s battle armor isn’t separate clothing—it’s actually a part of his body, as revealed by Yamamuro.
Yamamuro explains that, according to Akira Toriyama, the armor Frieza appears to wear is actually a part of his body – essentially, his natural state or true form. He clarifies that this ‘armor’ is depicted as splitting open when Frieza transforms.
This explanation fits well with how Akira Toriyama portrays Frieza’s transformation in Dragon Ball Z Chapter 102, “The Transformation.” Although it appears Frieza simply removes his battle armor to reveal a second layer of white “bio armor,” animator Naoki Yamamuro clarified that Frieza was actually shedding an outer shell during his initial transformation. This is why Vegeta initially laughs and sarcastically asks if that’s all there is to Frieza’s “Transformation!”
If Frieza’s armor is actually a natural part of his body, it would explain why he was already wearing it when he was resurrected in the Resurrection ‘F’ movie and in the first look at the updated Golden Frieza Saga in Dragon Ball Super.
Although never directly stated in Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Super, observant fans have long noticed a connection. Frieza’s “Bio Suit” in the video game is essentially the same armor he regenerates with in the Golden Frieza Saga.
Given how drastically Frieza can change his form, it’s not too shocking he can also generate a natural, protective layer. However, it’s easy to see why fans might mistake his Bio Suit for the armor Saiyans wear, as they look quite similar.
A remake of Dragon Ball Super: Beerus is scheduled to premiere in Fall 2026. An improved version of the Golden Frieza Arc is also being made and will likely follow soon after. Production of another currently unnamed arc has been confirmed, though details and a release date are not yet available.
You can now watch Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ and the Dragon Ball Super anime on Crunchyroll.
