Doordash is planning to start paying its merchants and delivery drivers with cryptocurrency, which the company believes will provide quicker and less expensive transactions for everyone.
Instead of tipping your DoorDash driver with cash, you’ll soon be able to pay them with cryptocurrency, a type of digital money called ‘Stablecoin.’
DoorDash is working with Tempo, a blockchain platform, to enable new features. Tempo is a specialized blockchain that only uses stablecoins – cryptocurrencies designed to maintain a consistent value, usually tied directly to assets like the US dollar.
I’ve been hearing a lot about how stablecoins can really speed up payouts and make them cheaper, and that’s a huge reason why DoorDash is working with Tempo. Andy Fang, one of the founders, actually said that’s what got them excited about partnering in the first place. It’s all about getting paid faster and without those crazy fees!
More companies are now using Tempo to process payments with stablecoins, including DoorDash, Stripe, Coastal Bank of Washington, and Arq Finance. To help even more businesses adopt this technology, we’re also introducing a new service to advise them on building stablecoin payment systems.

DoorDash pushes crypto pay for drivers and merchants
According to Tempo’s website, DoorDash is working with them to provide quicker payments to restaurants and drivers, so they don’t have to wait days to receive their earnings.
Fang believes stablecoins have the potential to significantly improve how finance works, both in the U.S. and around the world. He emphasized a desire to actively shape this change, rather than simply observing it.
Making payments to merchants and Dashers quicker and at a reasonable cost would benefit everyone involved.

At the time of writing, no specific date has been listed as to when this integration will go live.
I was really surprised to learn DoorDash isn’t alone in using Tempo! Apparently, Stripe – you know, the payment platform everyone uses – also built its blockchain stuff with them. And it’s not just tech companies either; Coastal Bank and a financial services firm called ARQ are Tempo customers too. It’s cool to see so many different kinds of businesses trusting them.
