What to know:
- Own The Doge DAO, a collective that holds the original ‘doge’ meme, on Tuesday said it had acquired the rights to use pet shiba inu Neiro’s images.
- The ongoing discussion will let the community and outside members comment and find a way forward to use Neiro’s IP.
- Neiro is the shiba inu adopted by the human owner of Kabosu, the dog that inspired the “doge” meme, after she passed away in July.
As a seasoned researcher with a penchant for the quirky and the digital, I find myself intrigued by this latest turn of events involving the ‘doge’ meme and its canine counterparts. The world of memecoins has always been a fascinating blend of culture, technology, and finance, but the recent acquisition of Neiro’s IP rights by Own The Doge DAO adds a new layer of complexity to this already intricate ecosystem.
An intellectual property (IP) ownership could soon end up in a fight of digital dogs.
On Tuesday, The Doge DAO, a group that owns the original ‘doge’ meme, announced they had acquired the rights to use images of the Shiba Inu dog named Neiro. They are currently engaging in community discussions about which NEIRO token will be allowed to continue using the dog’s likeness.
It’s exciting to share that @kabosumama has formally transferred the Neiro IP to our DAO, as confirmed by Own The Doge on X. When Atsuko unveiled the name of her new pet dog, Neiro, a flurry of tokens were minted in an effort to leverage her fame and narrative.
Since then, different tokens have been vying to be recognized as the authentic Neiro. There’s no universal standard for deciding which one is the real deal. But it doesn’t have to stay this way. It was mentioned in the post that our DAO holds the intellectual property rights for Neiro. They propose that the doge community could participate in the DAO and cast their votes for the token they believe to be the genuine one.
The continuing dialogue allows both the local community and external participants to offer comments and devise a strategy for employing Neiro’s intellectual property. Once this plan is established, it will be presented as a formal on-chain proposition for a vote among DOG token owners.
Neiro, the Shiba Inu, was taken in by the human caretaker of Kabosu, the pup famous for inspiring the “Doge” meme, following her passing in July. The arrival of a new dog led to the minting of various NEIRO tokens on Solana and Ethereum networks back then – with two such tokens reaching enormous market capitalizations numbering in hundreds of millions, and boasting active communities as of this Wednesday.
As far as Neiro’s owner Kabosumama was concerned, none of the tokens were legitimate.
She stated in a previous post that there are numerous references to Kabosu and Neiro, but she endorses only one crypto project – @ownthedog $dog. This is because they own the original Doge photo and intellectual property rights. They consistently strive for good deeds, engage in charitable activities, and promote Doge culture daily.
“Please watch out for token scams,” she said.
Different groups associated with Neiro, either users or observers, have expressed their views during the conversation. Each of these groups is presenting themselves as the pioneers or asserting their superiority over the others.
@Neirowoof” stated in the discussion forum that they feel the Neiro IP should align with the first cryptocurrency token based on the Neiro meme. This original Neiro token, being the first of its kind across all chains, has been supported by a passionate community who have strived to uphold Kabosu’s legacy since Atsuko’s blog post announcing the adoption of Neiro.
Regrettably, we’ve encountered various selfish entities bent on seizing control to reap instant profits. As the initial Neiro, we hold a unique status; we are not only the Sister of DOGE but also the Preservers of Kabosu’s Legacy. Rest assured, our affection for both Kabosu and Neiro remains unwavering, cherishing them as delightful beings that bring us wonderful creatures and memes.
Discussions arise as memecoins backed by intellectual property (IP) gain significance within the memecoin sphere, a realm that has thus far experienced no legal complications.
As a researcher, I’d express it like this: The intellectual properties (IP) I’m referring to encompass characters derived from memes, video games, and other culturally significant elements that have been legally protected through trademarks or copyrights before their digital tokens were made available to the public.
Tokens that mimic or symbolize intellectual property (IP) may encounter legal issues if their creators do not possess the ownership rights or proper authorization. For instance, tokens such as chillguy (CHILLGUY) and pnut (PNUT), which are well-known and actively traded, have already encountered legal disputes.
On a Monday, Mark Longo, who owns Peanut the Squirrel (the inspiration behind the PNUT token), sent a legal notice to Binance, alleging they violated his trademark by listing and selling the PNUT meme coin.
Longo asserted that Binance unauthorizedly employed his “Peanut the Squirrel” trademark and resemblance, pointing out that he’s been associated with the PNUT brand for educational and charitable squirrel-related projects since 2017.
Could NEIRO tokens see the same fate soon? Their communities will decide.
