I was completely shocked while watching Netflix’s The Four Seasons! There’s a fantastic surprise appearance by David Tennant, and it definitely feels like he’s being set up for a big role in season three. It was such a clever move and has me eagerly anticipating what’s next!
David Tennant has played a diverse range of characters on television and in film. He’s known for roles like the Doctor in Doctor Who, Kilgrave in Jessica Jones, D.I. Alec Hardy in Broadchurch, Crowley in Good Omens, Tony Baddingham in Rivals, Professor Huyang in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and General Krieg in The Legend of Vox Machina. He’s also appeared in major film franchises, notably as Barty Crouch Jr. in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Following significant roles in several TV shows, David Tennant recently made a surprise appearance in Netflix’s The Four Seasons. He plays Gianpiero, a man Anne (Kerri Kenney-Silver) meets in Italy during the season two finale. Previously, Anne had told Mark Brett (Steven Pasquale) she had an Italian boyfriend named Gianpiero, and now finds herself attracted to a neighbor who shares the same name.
I recently read an interview with Tracey Wigfield over at Decider, and she revealed something really interesting about how David Tennant came to be involved. Apparently, Tina Fey initially floated the idea of him – or someone with a similar magnetic personality – because they were looking for an actor who audiences would genuinely be thrilled to see more of in a potential third season. Both Wigfield and her co-creator, Lang Fisher, honestly thought Tennant would turn down the offer, so they were completely delighted when he said yes! You can find the full interview below if you’re curious.
We immediately thought of someone like David Tennant for the role of Anne’s neighbor, and we were really excited when he agreed to do it. He flew in, and we filmed his single scene in just one day. He was wonderful to work with and had great chemistry with Kerri.
Throughout the first two seasons, Anne has been working on self-improvement, trying to become a better version of herself, but it hasn’t been easy. We thought a romantic cliffhanger would be a great way to end a potential Season 3, introducing a character audiences would be eager to see more of.
Fisher stated that if Netflix decides to continue the show for a third season, they plan to feature Tennant in a more significant capacity. This news has excited Kenney-Silver, who really enjoyed collaborating with the Doctor Who actor and feels they have great chemistry both on and off camera.
I was completely blown away by all the creative ideas presented – there were so many on the page! I actually burst out laughing when I read the script and discovered one of the character’s names was Gianpiero – it was a total surprise.
David Tennant is just phenomenal. It’s amazing considering I’d only spent maybe an hour with him before filming. By the end of the day, we were laughing and joking like kids building a fort – we really clicked and had a blast. It was a surprisingly fun and unique connection.
David Tennant will be part of the cast of The Four Seasons, joining Tina Fey, Will Forte, Colman Domingo, Marco Calvani, and Erika Henningsen. Steve Carell will also reappear in a flashback episode as Nick, Anne’s former husband, despite his character’s death in the first season.
After her divorce from Nick, Anne has been dating casually and often joins her coupled-up friends on vacations. She tried dating Terry during a New Year’s Eve trip in the first season, but it didn’t work out. In the second season, she has a brief fling with Mark Brett. However, she quickly seems to hit it off with Gianpiero, and their connection might become a more serious relationship as the season progresses.
Just like when Anne introduced Ginny to her friends, Gianpiero’s arrival will probably change the group’s dynamic. He and Anne are getting along great, but Anne’s friends – Kate, Jack, Danny, Claude, and Ginny – are important to her, and he’ll need to build relationships with them too. Another thing to consider is how everyone will handle vacations now that Anne and Gianpiero live in Italy and the rest of the group is still in the United States.
In an interview with ScreenRant, actress Bella Wigfield expressed her hope for many more seasons of The Four Seasons. The show is currently a huge success on Netflix, ranking number one in the U.S. and number four globally, and receiving positive reviews with a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Given this popularity, Netflix is likely to renew the series, potentially giving actor David Tennant a larger role.
All episodes of The Four Seasons are now streaming on Netflix.
