Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Trailer Ignites Backlash With 1 Word

The latest trailer for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming movie is out, and while fans are excited about its impressive visuals and famous actors, many are expressing disappointment over the use of a particular word in the trailer.

Following the trailer’s release, viewers quickly took to the internet to share their thoughts. A common complaint was the actors’ use of American accents. However, many focused on a single line of dialogue – Tom Holland saying, “My dad is coming home.” Critics argued that the word “dad” feels too contemporary for a story set in Ancient Greece, instantly pulling some viewers out of the experience and leading to negative reactions to the trailer.

Should The Word “Dad” Have Been Omitted From The Odyssey?

I was really enjoying the trailer for the Odyssey until I heard a couple of very American accents and the use of ‘dad’ instead of ‘father’ – it just pulled me right out of the story, honestly. It felt a bit jarring!

One viewer expressed their disappointment with the film, objecting to the use of the word ‘Dad’ instead of ‘Father,’ feeling it didn’t fit the movie’s tone. They had hoped the film would be a major hit – something audiences haven’t seen in a long time – but the latest trailer suggests that won’t be the case.

Someone else mentioned they’re excited about reading The Odyssey, but they find the repeated use of the word ‘Dad’ annoying.

One X user expressed disbelief and frustration, questioning why the terms “dad” and “dady” are being used in a translation of The Odyssey.

The Odyssey Is Expected to Be a Blockbuster Hit

Despite some early criticism of the trailer, everything suggests that Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is poised to be a major success. The film has a substantial budget – around $250 million – and features a stellar cast, with Matt Damon playing the lead role of Odysseus. The movie is packed with other well-known actors, including Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Mia Goth, and Elliot Page.

I’m so excited about Christopher Nolan tackling The Odyssey! It’s based on the incredible story by Homer, the ancient Greek poet, and follows Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he struggles to get back home after the Trojan War. I recently saw Nolan on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and he explained why he was drawn to this story – he genuinely believes Homer was the most creative mind of his time. It’s going to be amazing to see his vision of this classic tale!

Nolan explained that it’s uncertain if Homer was a real person, suggesting he represents the storytelling style of his era. He compared Homer to the Marvel comics of today, noting that both tap into a fundamental human desire to believe in beings with extraordinary power – gods walking among us in the case of ancient stories, and superheroes in modern comics.

The Odyssey will be on July 17, 2026.
