Christopher Meloni is saying goodbye to the Law & Order franchise after Organized Crime was cancelled. In a video posted to Instagram, Meloni expressed his gratitude to fans for their support of his character, Elliot Stabler, and for welcoming him back to the role. He called it “a good ride.”
Christopher Meloni first portrayed Detective Elliot Stabler in the original Law & Order: Special Victims Unit pilot in 1999. For the next twelve years, his character had a complex, on-again, off-again dynamic with Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay). Meloni departed SVU in 2011, but returned in 2021 to launch the series Organized Crime. He also made occasional guest appearances on the main Law & Order series during its run and may appear on SVU again in the future. Over the 17 years Meloni has played Stabler, the character has faced significant hardships, including a separation and reconciliation with his wife, a traumatic birth during a car accident, his wife’s death in an explosion, being shot while undercover, facing internal affairs investigations for using excessive force, and interrogating Hayden Panettiere while she portrayed two different characters. In a recent Instagram post, Meloni expressed his gratitude, saying, “I had a great time playing him. It was a great ride.” He also thanked fans for helping him build a career beyond his expectations.
