The new sci-fi thriller didn’t do well in theaters, but it’s still too early to say if it will be a hit overall. Despite the disappointing box office numbers, the film – starring Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson – has become popular on Apple TV, quickly rising to become one of their most-rented or purchased movies.
I was checking out the latest numbers on Flix Patrol, and as of February 18th, Mercy is currently sitting at number six on Apple TV’s top 10 movie list. It’s behind some really popular titles like Marty Supreme, Zootopia 2, and The Housemaid – which is actually number one right now. But honestly, I was surprised to see Mercy doing so well, beating out films like Hamnet, Nuremberg, and even Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair! It’s cool to see it finding an audience.
Mercy is a futuristic thriller where LAPD detective Chris Raven finds himself on trial after being accused of his wife’s murder – but the judge isn’t a person, it’s an artificial intelligence. Chris Pratt stars as Detective Raven, with Rebecca Ferguson playing the AI Judge Maddox, and a strong supporting cast including Kali Reis, Annabelle Wallis, and Chris Sullivan.
Honestly, even with some really fantastic actors, this movie just didn’t connect with audiences. It only made about $53 million at the box office, despite costing $60 million to make – which is a shame, because I actually thought it was a pretty solid film.
The film received very different reactions from general audiences and critics. While viewers gave it a decent 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, professional critics overwhelmingly disliked it, giving it a score of only 24%. Reviewers criticized the confusing storyline and felt the movie didn’t utilize actor Chris Pratt effectively. One critic even quipped that the best thing about Mercy is that it’s only 100 minutes long.
Chris Pratt Once Had High Hopes For The Sci-Fi Flick
Even though Mercy wasn’t well-received by critics or audiences, Pratt previously praised the film’s originality while filming in May 2024. He stated, “It’s truly original, something you don’t see much of anymore,” and added that the story was fantastic.
Chris Pratt was immediately captivated by the script for Mercy, saying he couldn’t stop reading once he started. He also credited director Timur Bekmambetov’s strong creative vision, producer Chuck Roven, and his family as key reasons for accepting the role.
He said filming in Los Angeles was important to him because he wants to be able to put his kids to bed each night. That was a major factor in his decision.
The film didn’t perform well in cinemas, but it still has a chance to find an audience online. Several recent science fiction movies have struggled in theaters initially, only to become popular when released digitally and on streaming services. While a streaming release date hasn’t been announced for this film yet, it’s expected to eventually become available on Prime Video.
You can now rent or buy the movie Mercy on several streaming platforms, like YouTube, Amazon, and the Apple TV Store.
