Chipotle CEO says customers should “just ask” for more food amid portion debate

Chipotle is once again facing questions about how much food they serve customers, following recent comments from CEO Brian Niccol in an interview with Yahoo Finance about viral complaints on the topic.

These comments follow ongoing online criticism of the brand’s portion sizes, as TikTok users are frequently sharing photos of bowls that appear smaller than advertised.

The debate over portion sizes began in 2024 after TikTok videos highlighted customer complaints about inconsistent servings. Some people started recording their orders inside stores, suggesting it resulted in bigger portions, while others claimed certain locations were giving customers less food.

Chipotle maintains it hasn’t intentionally reduced portion sizes, but admits some restaurants needed additional training to serve consistent amounts of food.

Chipotle CEO says brand is “about abundance” despite backlash

In the interview, Niccol responded to the criticism by saying customers who want larger portions shouldn’t worry too much about it.

He explained that if you need anything extra, don’t hesitate to ask. He assured me that the team members are always happy to help and will never refuse a reasonable request.

We’re committed to serving generous portions of food, and that’s always been central to who we are. We consistently offer large, delicious bowls and burritos, and we always will.”

When asked directly if Chipotle is reducing portions, Niccol responded, “We are not.”

I always tell my team to fill our bowls and burritos as full as possible. I want customers to be saying it’s more than they can handle!

We focus on providing a lot of value for our customers. We believe value is what you get out of a product or service compared to what you pay for it. I’m committed to keeping our prices stable, even though my business costs are increasing by a few percentage points. Instead of raising prices for customers, we’re covering those increased costs ourselves.

In April, Chipotle ran a special promotion: customers who wore a hockey jersey got a buy-one-get-one deal. They also announced a $2 million giveaway to show appreciation for healthcare workers and teachers.
