Someone stole three cherry trees that were given as a gift to represent the friendship between Japan and the United Kingdom. Local leaders are very upset, saying the theft damages a hopeful message of peace.
Recently planted in Brislington, Bristol, these trees are part of a project celebrating the relationship between the two nations.
Cherry blossoms represent new beginnings and friendship between countries, so it’s especially disappointing to see them fade, particularly for everyone working on this initiative.
So, I heard from the Brislington Liberal Democrats that someone actually stole some trees we planted! It wasn’t just about the trees being gone, either – there was other damage too, which is super frustrating. They put out a statement on March 18th about it.
Thieves steal cherry tree gift
We’re very upset to report that the three cherry trees recently planted as a symbol of peace and friendship between Japan and the UK have been stolen. The thieves also took the supporting stakes, protective guards, and the information sign about the trees, according to a post on X.
Bristol’s tree experts believe this theft is an unusual, one-time event, and they haven’t received any other reports of similar incidents in the surrounding area.
The group said they plan to request replacements next year, including bigger posts and protective barriers, to prevent this issue from recurring.

The photos accompanying the announcement reveal bare ground where the trees used to be, and any protective coverings have also been taken away.
We don’t yet know who stole the items or if anyone is suspected, but local authorities are currently evaluating the extent of the damage.
By April 2005, over 8,000 Japanese cherry trees, known as Sakura, had been planted at more than 990 sites throughout the UK. This was the first time the organization had ever reported a tree being stolen.
This week has seen some strange thefts, including a case where scammers used paper bags to fraudulently purchase $320,000 worth of Pokemon cards.
