Throughout the entire hour, from the opening sequence to the “Weekend Update” segment, it’s clear this show is heavily influenced by its American original, creating a strange viewing experience. It feels less like a unique British comedy show and more like a British version imitating Saturday Night Live. It was inevitable that comparisons would be made, and the producers’ attempt to directly copy the format and style of the original in hopes of achieving the same success is understandable. However, this direct imitation raises a question: who is this show actually for? How many dedicated SNL fans or loyal British viewers would choose to watch this version instead of, or alongside, the original American show?

Ryan Gosling has been playfully talking about a very unusual co-star while promoting his new film: a mop! He shared that, feeling lonely on set while playing a character isolated in space, he jokingly asked for a “scene partner.” The directors, Lord and Miller, surprisingly delivered – they created a mop with duct tape and glasses, affectionately named “Moppy Ringwald.” Gosling described having a wonderful day improvising and interacting with Moppy, and the directors were happy to accommodate his request, even pausing filming to do so. Surprisingly, some of this interaction actually made it into the final cut of the movie.

Like most Disney live-action remakes, this new trailer closely follows the story of the original animated film: Moana must save her island by finding the demigod Maui and restoring the heart of Te Fiti. We see quick shots of Moana’s animal friends, Pua and HeiHei, the greedy crab Tamatoa, and the mischievous coconut pirates, the Kakamora. The trailer doesn’t suggest any major changes to the original Moana story, but it’s almost certain to be a box office success. Let’s hope some of those earnings go towards a good wig for Maui in the likely sequel! Moana arrives in theaters on July 10th.

The Wonder Man series, a new show from Marvel Television, debuted on Disney+ earlier in 2024. Created by Andrew Guest and Destin Daniel Cretton (who also worked on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), the show features Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams. Ben Kingsley returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to play his familiar character, Trevor Slattery.

The first season of the HBO crime drama follows FBI agent Tom Brandis and his team as they investigate a string of robberies, bringing them into conflict with Robbie Prendergrast (Tom Pelphrey). Originally planned as a limited series, the show—called Task—was brought back for a second season thanks to overwhelmingly positive reviews and strong ratings.

Petzold’s new film doesn’t follow a typical thriller formula, but it does have a surprising reveal that shatters the unusual world its characters build. This secret feels increasingly likely as the story progresses, yet no one directly addresses it. The film’s dreamlike atmosphere begins after a car crash, when a woman named Betty (Barbara Auer) offers help. It’s strange that the injured woman, Laura, immediately asks to stay at Betty’s house instead of going to the hospital, and even more surprising that Betty readily agrees, preparing a room and leaving out refreshments. Laura’s confusion could be explained by the trauma of the accident or her pre-existing sadness. However, Betty’s behavior is even more peculiar. She watches Laura sleep with a mixture of shock and wonder, accidentally calling her by a different name, ‘Yelena,’ and later offering clothes that belonged to her daughter.

The series follows the story of Pablo Escobar and his drug cartel in Colombia, detailing their rise to power and eventual downfall, alongside the attempts by U.S. law enforcement to capture both Escobar and his competitor, Gilberto Rodríguez Orejuela. While Narcos takes some liberties with the true events, it remains compelling thanks to the believable performances of its actors.

After becoming a huge hit on Prime Video, with its third season reaching number one in over 120 countries and attracting three times more viewers than its first season, The Summer I Turned Pretty is now being adapted into a movie. The series is based on the popular novel by Jenny Han.

Nic Gadd’s new series, Half Man, which he created, wrote, and stars in, will debut on HBO on April 23rd and on the BBC on April 24th. This project is his first since the release of Baby Reindeer.
