6 Kaiju We Would Love To See Make A Comeback In Godzilla Minus Zero

Although the idea of King Ghidorah appearing in Godzilla Minus One is thrilling, several other classic monsters that haven’t been seen on screen for a while would also be fantastic additions to Toho’s new Godzilla films.

Currently, Godzilla is the only monster established in the world of Godzilla Minus One and its planned sequel. While this could stay true, it would be unusual for Godzilla to fight only humans in two consecutive films within the same series.

Director Takashi Yamazaki has hinted that a sequel to Godzilla Minus One would likely feature another monster battle. Before Minus Zero was officially announced in January 2024, he explained that because Shin Godzilla and Minus One each told complete stories, he’d probably introduce a new enemy monster if he directed a follow-up film.

The teaser trailer for Godzilla Minus One doesn’t confirm or deny any specific plot points, but it does hint at a new danger. It shows what appears to be anti-gravity, a power Godzilla hasn’t demonstrated before, supporting the idea of a unique threat.

Most fans believe King Ghidorah will be the main enemy in Godzilla Minus One, and there are hints that this is true. However, Toho hasn’t confirmed anything, and they could surprise us with a different monster – or even have Godzilla face off against two opponents.

Beyond King Ghidorah, who was last featured in the 2019 film Godzilla: King of the Monsters, there are many other exciting monsters that could appear. Some of these haven’t been seen in movies for over two decades and are definitely due for a comeback.

6. Hedorah

Hedorah, also called the Smog Monster, is a strange, blob-like creature from outer space that thrives on pollution. This concept fit perfectly with the environmental message of Toho’s 1971 film, Godzilla vs Hedorah, which shows humanity creating its own problems—and relying on Godzilla to fix them.

The idea that humans often cause the problems in Godzilla movies has been a core theme since the very beginning – even Godzilla’s origin reflects this. This concept has remained important throughout the series, and while the monster Hedorah strongly embodies it, he’s only appeared in two films so far.

5. Anguirus

As a huge Godzilla fan, I’ve been thinking about who they could bring in for Godzilla Minus Zero, and Anguirus really stands out. He’s not exactly villain material, but he’s special – he was the first monster Godzilla ever fought, way back in Godzilla Raids Again in 1955! What’s cool is Toho later flipped the script and made him an ally. He teamed up with Godzilla in Destroy All Monsters and again in Godzilla vs. Gigan, and those were awesome pairings. They tried a few times to bring him back in the ’90s, but nothing really stuck, so that ’72 movie remains his peak. His last appearance was in Godzilla: Final Wars in 2004, and it was a bit of a letdown – he was mind-controlled and quickly defeated. Honestly, it’s been way too long since we’ve seen Anguirus, and if Minus Zero introduces a monster that’s on Godzilla’s side, or at least neutral, Anguirus would be a perfect fit. It’d be amazing to see that classic team-up revived!

4. Varan

First appearing in 1958 in the Toho film Varan the Unbelievable, Varan is a unique monster capable of swimming and gliding through the air. This ability made him a threat in any environment. He officially joined the Godzilla universe in 1968 as a resident of Monster Island, but his only appearance alongside Godzilla was a brief cameo in Destroy All Monsters. Many feel it was a mistake not to feature Varan as a true opponent for Godzilla, and several attempts to incorporate him into later films haven’t lived up to his potential. Varan’s diverse abilities would have made him a formidable challenger. While both the Heisei and Millennium eras missed opportunities for a Godzilla vs. Varan battle, the new film Godzilla Minus Zero could finally give fans the fight they’ve been waiting for, pitting Godzilla against a monster who isn’t easily defeated.

3. Titanosaurus

An interesting choice for a monster in Godzilla Minus One would be Titanosaurus, a water-dwelling creature who previously allied with Mechagodzilla against Godzilla in Terror of Mechagodzilla. That 1975 film was both the first and last time Titanosaurus appeared in the original Godzilla series.

Despite being portrayed as a villain, the movie quickly established that Titanosaurus was a gentle creature – a peaceful monster who simply ate fish deep in the ocean. He was only forced to help Mechagodzilla fight Godzilla because the film’s true villains used mind control. This idea of a misunderstood monster could be relevant to Godzilla Minus Zero, especially if that film features multiple giant creatures. Like Godzilla, Titanosaurus might have been transformed by radiation, but instead of attacking Japan, he remained hidden underwater. However, the events of the new film could lead him into a battle with either Godzilla or the villain from Minus Zero.

2. Gigan

Gigan is a fan-favorite Godzilla villain, but surprisingly, he’s never been the main bad guy in a film. Even in his first appearance, Godzilla vs. Gigan, he had to share the role with King Ghidorah. Despite this, Gigan has always been a powerful and dangerous opponent in his three movie appearances.

Gigan is a fearsome enemy of Godzilla, equipped with razor-sharp claws and a spinning saw blade built into his body. He’s notorious for inflicting serious damage, and in the movie Godzilla vs. Gigan, he became the first monster ever to draw blood from Godzilla.

In the later film Godzilla: Final Wars, Toho gave Gigan a powerful, high-tech makeover that fans loved. With today’s visual effects, this updated design could look even more spectacular. A battle between Godzilla and Gigan would be exciting, and Godzilla Minus One, or a future installment, could be a great place to showcase it.

1. Biollante

While King Ghidorah is a strong contender for the main villain in Godzilla Minus One, Biollante is another likely possibility. This plant-based monster is popular with fans, even though she only appeared in one film. Biollante is best known for her sad origin story and her 1989 battle with Godzilla in Godzilla vs. Biollante. After that fight, she seemingly flew into space and hasn’t been seen since.

The movie revealed that Biollante was created from a unique combination of DNA: a rose, the deceased daughter of a scientist, and Godzilla himself. This backstory was central to Biollante’s character, portraying her as a tragic rebirth – the scientist’s daughter given a monstrous second life.

The ending of Godzilla Minus One sparked theories about a possible connection to the monster Biollante in future films. The scene after the credits showed Noriko with a dark spot on her neck, which seems to be linked to Godzilla. This suggests a new take on the Biollante story, where a woman could be infected with Godzilla’s DNA.
