• Cardano’s Voltaire phase, the final stage of its roadmap to create a fully decentralized blockchain ecosystem, is set to occur in June.
  • The Cardano Node will reach version 9.0, making it ready for a hard fork to enter the Voltaire era.

As a researcher with experience in blockchain technology and an interest in Cardano’s development, I find the upcoming transition into the Voltaire era of Cardano to be an exciting milestone. The final phase of this multiyear program, which aims to make Cardano a fully decentralized ecosystem, is set to occur later this month.

Charles Hoskinson, Cardano‘s co-founder, announced in a recent blog post that the Cardano network is approaching its final stage of a several-year journey towards becoming a completely decentralized blockchain system, which is expected to be achieved later this month.

To initiate the process, it is essential that the validating node software overseen by Cardano’s stake pool operators (SPOs) be updated to the most recent version first. Subsequently, the blockchain will undergo a significant transformation, referred to as a hard fork, which renders previous versions incompatible. This event marks the beginning of a new phase for Cardano, named Voltaire, and signifies its transition from the current Basho era.

Once the transition is made, IOHK, the development company behind Cardano, will no longer oversee the day-to-day management of the seven-year-old blockchain. Instead, the community members will take full responsibility for its operation.

Based on Hoskinson’s post, it seems that Cardano Node is expected to reach version 9.0 in June. This indicates that Cardano is prepared for a hard fork, known as a “Chang fork,” and is awaiting approximately 70% of the Stake Pool Operators (SPOs) to install the new node. Once this occurs, a hard fork can take place, advancing Cardano into the “Age of Voltaire.”

“I will spearhead a cutting-edge blockchain governance structure complete with yearly budgets, a communal treasury, and the collective intelligence of our membership base to steer our decisions.”

In accordance with discussions in governance platforms and blogs, the initial phase of Voltaire on Cardano is set to introduce CIP 1694. This proposition empowers ADA token holders to cast votes on matters that enhance the Cardano platform, including topics and features. Subsequently, further innovative functionalities such as proxy voting and treasury withdrawals will be enabled. These features enable users to propose and finance projects within the Cardano ecosystem.
According to CoinGecko’s latest update, ADA tokens have experienced a decrease of 1.6% over the past 24 hours. In contrast, the tokens comprising the CoinDesk 20 index have seen greater losses, with an average decline of 2.2%.
