As a seasoned researcher with a keen interest in technology and international trade policies, I find myself intrigued by this peculiar situation involving the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the import delays of specific Antminer ASIC miners. Having spent years studying these matters, it’s not every day that one encounters such an intricate web of politics, technology, and commerce.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in the United States is temporarily detaining specific shipments of Antminer ASIC miners at multiple ports throughout the country. Sources within seven American bitcoin mining firms, who requested anonymity, assert that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has instructed CBP to delay certain shipments of Bitmain ASIC miners.
It’s worth noting that unlike MicroBT and Canaan, other Chinese manufacturers of ASIC mining equipment, haven’t faced the same level of scrutiny.
Miners Face Months-Long Delay
Based on Blockspace’s recent findings, certain shipments are experiencing delays of up to two months. These delays are happening at various ports nationwide, such as those in San Francisco and Detroit. The impacted imports encompass the most recent Antminer S21 and T21 models from Bitmain.
Despite the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirming the detention of these items, they have yet to offer clear explanations regarding the basis for the delay or an estimated release date for the shipments.
An authority on prolonged hold-ups, lasting “several months,” has stated that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) detentions surpassing 30 days without filing formal requests to the party responsible for customs declarations (Importer of Record or IOR) are exceptionally rare and significantly below the established norms.
Additionally, they pointed out monitoring of staff from the Advanced Targeting Unit (ATU) at particular harbors, and observed a trend where companies are suggesting others to steer clear of certain access points, especially those situated along the Western coastline. Furthermore, a source disclosed that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is retaining approximately 200 devices.
In spite of numerous requests for clarification, neither the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) nor the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have provided responses, yet they persist in imposing daily charges that now exceed $200,000. To resolve this issue, the affected company has enlisted legal representation to query the FCC for answers.
Sophgo’s Huawei Link Putting Antminers in the Crosshairs?
A potential reason that hasn’t been definitively proven yet could be the use of Sophgo chips in Antminer control boards. Sophgo is being investigated due to suspicions that they violated U.S. sanctions by providing these chips to Huawei, a company under trade restrictions since 2019.
It’s worth noting that Sophgo and Bitmain are led by the same chief executive officer, Micree Zhan. Rumors circulated about a Sophgo chip being discovered in a Huawei product, leading to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) deciding to terminate its commercial ties with Sophgo.
It’s important to note that while there isn’t a definitive connection drawn between the halts in imports and this controversy, it’s been confirmed through reliable sources that Bitmain employs the Sophgo CV1835 chip in some of their mining rigs, such as the Antminer T21 and specific S19 models like the S19 XP, S19 Pro, and S19j Pro.
