OP_CAT is a proposed Bitcoin upgrade, aiming to bring Ethereum-like smart contract capability to the world’s oldest and largest blockchain network. While by no means short of supporters, OP_CAT remains in its very early stages in terms of acquiring the consensus necessary to be merged into Bitcoin’ core software.
As a seasoned researcher in the blockchain space, I’ve had the opportunity to closely follow the developments within the Bitcoin community for quite some time now. One proposal that has recently piqued my interest is OP_CAT, an ambitious upgrade aimed at bringing Ethereum-like smart contract capability to Bitcoin.StarkWare, a leading developer specializing in Layer-2 solutions with a focus on building the Starknet network on Ethereum, has shared insights into how the Bitcoin blockchain could be transformed if the proposed technical change called OP_CAT is implemented.

As a Bitcoin analyst working in the testing environment called Signet, I had the opportunity to witness StarkWare’s groundbreaking demonstration. They showcased how zero-knowledge proofs, a sophisticated cryptographic method gaining significant traction due to its ability to compress data or verify statements while preserving privacy, could be effectively implemented on the original and pioneering blockchain – Bitcoin itself.

The objective of the project was to showcase the functionalities of OP_CAT, a proposed enhancement for Bitcoin – known for its ability to introduce Ethereum-like “smart contracts,” which have been absent from Satoshi Nakamoto’s original design for Bitcoin as a decentralized digital currency focused primarily on peer-to-peer transactions.
Although OP_CAT has a considerable following, it still needs to gain broader acceptance within the Bitcoin community to be integrated into its core software.

StarkWare strongly endorses this proposal in public, given the significant advantages it brings to the Bitcoin community and the broader blockchain industry as a whole. (StarkWare stated this in a press release.)
