• Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan is suspected of having Malaria, a family spokesperson told CoinDesk.
  • The U.S. citizen has been in a Nigerian jail for over two months on charges of money laundering and tax evasion.

As an analyst with experience in international law and human rights, I am deeply concerned about the situation of Tigran Gambaryan, Binance’s compliance head, who is currently detained in Nigeria. The latest reports suggest that he is suspected to have Malaria, but due to inadequate medical facilities in the prison, he has not been moved to a hospital yet.

Tigran Gambaryan, the compliance chief at Binance, currently detained in Nigeria, is reportedly suspected to be suffering from Malaria according to a representative of his family who spoke with CoinDesk.

On May 24th, in a Nigerian court, Gambaryan unexpectedly fell ill. He, as well as the exchange he’s affiliated with, are currently under investigation for allegations involving tax evasion and money laundering.

Despite a court order from Justice Emeka Nwite on May 23rd, Tigran Gabaryan remains uncared for in Kuje prison instead of being transferred to the hospital. The exact nature of his illness hasn’t been confirmed yet due to the insufficient medical facilities at Kuje. It is believed that he may be battling a severe throat infection and Malaria.

As a U.S. crypto investor following Binance closely, I’ve been concerned about the situation unfolding with one of their executives, Gambaryan. He was invited to Nigeria by the authorities to address a dispute between the government and Binance. However, after meeting with officials, both Gambaryan and another executive, Nadeem Anjarwalla, were detained by law enforcement. While Anjarwalla managed to escape, he’s now included in the money laundering charges against Gambaryan. This unexpected turn of events has left the crypto community on edge as we await further developments from Nigeria.

Yuki Gambaryan, wife of Gambaryan, expressed her deep sadness and shock to CoinDesk over the fact that the authorities have disregarded a court order and failed to take action.

“Tigran doesn’t merit such cruelty,” she asserted. “He’s been unjustly detained for attending a gathering in Abuja, and this situation has escalated beyond reasonable bounds. I implore anyone with the power to intervene, including our American authorities, to acknowledge that an innocent man’s life hangs in the balance. At the very least, allow him access to medical care so he can heal. However, what he truly needs is to be reunited with us.”

According to a recent news article, the hearings for the alleged tax infringements and money laundering offenses have been arranged for the 14th and 20th of June, respectively.
