As a seasoned veteran of Honkai: Star Rail, I’ve seen it all – from the rise and fall of characters, to the power-creep that keeps us all on our toes. But when Jiaoqiu entered the scene, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia for Pela, the debuff support who once ruled supreme.
In the game Honkai: Star Rail, Pela was often considered the top debuff support character, despite her being only a 4-star rarity. However, as is common in gacha games, there’s always a risk of power creep lurking. After more than a year of dominance, HoYoverse introduced a new debuffer who challenges Pela for the top spot.
The recently introduced character, Jiaoqiu, is a top-tier Fire-Nihility unit. Unlike Pela who weakens an enemy’s defense, Jiaoqiu amplifies the damage enemies take from your team. Although their methods of dealing damage differ, at its core, Jiaoqiu’s debuffing isn’t remarkably powerful compared to Pela’s defense reduction. However, a key advantage for Jiaoqiu is his ability to make enemies take additional Ultimate damage, which makes him an excellent choice for high DPS units such as Acheron and Argenti. Consequently, when constructing the optimal team composition in HSR, consider this unique skillset of Jiaoqiu’s.
3 Jiaoqiu + Acheron + Pela + Aventurine
There’s no doubt that Jiaoqiu is one of the best Supports for Acheron in Honkai: Star Rail. One of the main reasons why he’s so good with Acheron is his ability to operate as her battery in combat. After casting his Ultimate, Jiaoqiu will create a field that applies a DoT on every enemy who takes action, which in turn grants Acheron multiple Slashed Dream stacks per turn. The field also increases Acheron’s Ultimate DMG as his debuffs increase enemies’ DMG taken. In short, Jiaoqiu allows Acheron to cast her Ult more frequently while greatly increasing her DMG.
In Honkai: Star Rail, Acheron serves as the primary damage dealer in the Jiaoqiu team composition. To utilize her Ascension passive fully, an additional Nihility unit is beneficial. Pela’s ability to lower enemies’ Defense will amplify the damage Acheron can deal with her Ultimates. Lastly, Aventurine is an excellent choice for sustain as she consistently debuffs enemies while also building up Acheron’s Ultimate with the team.
If Acheron is identified as character C2, then Harmony characters such as Sparkle, Robin, or Ruan Mei could be used instead of Pela. For those who don’t have Aventurine, a 4-star substitute like Gallagher can be utilized instead.

2 Jiaoqiu + Argenti + Jade + Huohuo
As a fan, I’ve found that pairing Jiaoqiu, who amplifies enemy DMG and Ult DMG, works best with characters who heavily leverage their Ultimates, such as Argenti. To make this Jiaoqiu team effective, you might want to incorporate Huohuo, who frequently enables the use of Ults. Huohuo serves as a Sustain unit, healing her allies when needed, and she also boosts ATK% through her Ultimate.
Regarding Jade, she contributes significantly to teamwork by dishing out damage using her Ultimate ability. This trait makes her an excellent choice for both Argenti and Jiaoqiu. Argenti’s knack for launching multiple attacks with his Ultimate will ensure that Jade can continuously strike enemies with her Talent-based follow-up attacks. Simultaneously, these two units can deal massive damage, bolstered by Jiaoqiu’s debuffs.

1 Jiaoqiu + Kafka + Black Swan + Huohuo
In the game Honkai: Star Rail, character Jiaoqiu complements Kafka exceptionally well. With Jiaoqiu’s Burn stacks and his ability to amplify enemy damage taken, each time Kafka uses her Skill or Ultimate, she deals a significant amount of damage. Black Swan is also an ideal teammate for Kafka, boosting her Damage Per Second (DPS). Black Swan can apply a Defense-reducing debuff on enemies, which enhances the damage dealt by both Jiaoqiu and Kafka. However, it’s worth noting that Jiaoqiu’s debuffs don’t have a major impact on Black Swan’s stacks since they are primarily affixed to enemies until they perish without refreshing. Nevertheless, this trio forms an outstanding Damage over Time (DoT) team in the game.
In summary, as each of the three units inflicts Damage over Time (DoT), it’s logical to include Huohuo to boost their Attack Percentage, ensuring they remain viable in combat and can also regenerate energy.
