For decades, people have loved horror movies, but it’s only recently started gaining recognition with awards. This May has been especially strong for the genre, with new releases proving incredibly popular and breaking box office records.
A24’s latest movie has taken the top spot at the box office, surpassing The Mandalorian and Grogu. It exceeded expectations, earning $81.4 million domestically during its opening weekend. Initial predictions estimated around $80 million, but the film has already surpassed that, with a total worldwide opening of $118 million.
Backrooms Is Breaking Multiple Records
Despite costing less than $10 million to make, the horror film Backrooms is already proving to be a big success. It broke the record for the highest Thursday preview earnings for any horror movie.
I’m absolutely blown away by what Kane Parsons has achieved! Not only is his film, Backrooms, A24’s biggest release ever, but at just 20 years old, he’s made history as the youngest director to ever hit number one with his very first film. It’s incredible to see such a fresh, young talent make such a huge impact!
Blumhouse-Atomic Monster is celebrating another big win, with their film taking the No. 1 spot at the box office. This success means they now hold the top two positions domestically, boosted by the continued popularity of Obsession, which has now earned over $100 million.
The film experienced a considerable drop in ticket sales during its second weekend. After opening on May 22nd, it earned $25 million over the three-day period, a 69% decrease from its opening weekend. So far, the film – the first Star Wars installment in seven years – has made $206.4 million, while it cost $165 million to produce. Disney will likely need the film to earn twice its current gross to consider it a success.
The thriller Obsession has earned $127 million globally, despite being made with a budget of less than $1 million. It’s currently the second highest-grossing film domestically.
Backrooms Could Expand With More Entries
The movie Backrooms was a hit with both audiences and critics. It received very positive reviews, earning an 89% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating from critics, while viewers gave it a 74% rating and a B- CinemaScore.
Despite its low production cost, the film has already made a profit and sets the stage for future sequels. Director Parsons revealed that plans for additional installments have been in development since 2022, stating they are not just possible, but were always the goal.
The movie is based on a scary story that first became popular on the 4chan website in 2019. It centers around a made-up alternate dimension that holds many potential secrets and terrifying experiences.
I’d really love to see this developed as a series,” the director said. “For me, it’s less about what genre it fits into and more about the relationships between the characters. I envision it as a character-driven drama with a supernatural, tech-focused thriller element – that’s where my strengths lie and what I’m most excited about.
Backrooms is playing in theaters.
