As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must admit that the Assassin’s Creed series has been a rollercoaster ride for me. From the initial thrill of exploring both the past and present through Desmond Miles to the recent focus on historical settings alone, Ubisoft’s flagship franchise has kept me on my toes.
In the initial phases of Assassin’s Creed, gamers delved into both ancient times and contemporary settings via the character Desmond Miles. Although more recent installments have shifted focus away from the individual within the Animus, Ubisoft intends to rectify this issue in the coming developments.
In a recent interview, the head of Assassin’s Creed, Marc-Alexis Coté, discussed the challenges faced in linking past and future events effectively within the game. Essentially, the Animus – a futuristic device that accesses DNA to simulate ancestral memories – is used in Assassin’s Creed to reenact history. Desmond Miles served as both a character in the game and the central narrative reference for the entire Assassin’s Creed series, as he ventured into the Animus.
In essence, Coté told Eurogamer that Desmond’s adventure was central to the current-day struggle to discover potent Isu relics, known as Pieces of Eden, which could significantly alter history. However, when Desmond perished at the conclusion of Assassin’s Creed 3, it presented a creative dilemma. He explained that wrapping up Desmond’s tale was a challenging choice, and afterwards, the contemporary narrative found it hard to establish its direction.
To tackle this, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will establish foundations for the series’ future, as it’ll merge into Assassin’s Creed Infinity – a platform within the universe portrayed as an Animus. According to Coté, this integration will enable the contemporary storyline to complement instead of overshadow the historical adventure, thereby creating a significant distinction between past and present events that emphasizes the impact of the past on the present, and the struggle between freedom and control as key themes.
Coté stated that the foundations for this upcoming change will be established through Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. This game will serve as a stepping stone for the story’s development, which will expand and evolve over the coming years.
As a gaming enthusiast, I was eagerly awaiting the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows in October. However, it seems that fate has other plans, as the launch date has been pushed back to February 14, 2025. Ubisoft announced this shift to give their developers extra time to refine the game, and unfortunately, early access has also been scrapped.
