Assassin’s Creed Shadows Update Makes Key Changes To Shrines Amid Cultural Sensitivity Discussion

On the release date of Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, an update is rolled out that implements some significant adjustments to the game’s shrines, restricting players from damaging specific items within them. This patch follows a debate about cultural sensitivity in the 16th-century Japan-themed game.

As stated by IGN, the update modifies the game to prevent monks within shrines from bleeding when attacked. Additionally, structures like tables and racks located in temples and shrines are now immune to destruction. Nevertheless, bowls and drums are still breakable, while you can move or push tables around.

This week, when asked about Assassin’s Creed Shadows and its shrines, Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba expressed his firm stance. He emphasized, as reported by IGN, that desecrating a shrine is unacceptable – it is a grave insult to the nation. He stressed the importance of appreciating and respecting a country’s culture and religion, and made it clear that we should not tolerate actions that disregard them.

Hiroyuki Kada, a Japanese politician, expressed concern that if individuals are able to deface a shrine within the game Assassin’s Creed Shadows, such actions could potentially inspire similar misconduct in reality.

As a passionate admirer, I share their concerns too. While it’s crucial to uphold the principles of free speech, it’s equally important to steer clear of actions that disparage our cherished local traditions and cultures.

An earlier-this-year uploaded video displayed a game character recklessly rushing through a sacred site, instigating chaos without being prompted by any particular mission objective. Instead, the player freely decided to carry out such actions.

In July 2024, Ubisoft publicly announced that the game Shadows is a work of fiction. To ensure authenticity in their creative decisions, they consulted external experts like historians and researchers. However, some promotional materials for the game initially upset members of the Japanese community. For this oversight, Ubisoft expressed their deep apologies.

The game “Shadows” has been released for play on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with main characters Naoe and Yasuke.
