A Chinese citizen has been sentenced to a year in jail and fined 1 million Kenyan shillings after being caught attempting to illegally export over 2,200 live ants from Kenya. A Nairobi court decided the strict punishment was necessary to discourage others from similar actions.
I couldn’t believe what I read! This guy, Zhang Kequn, was caught at the Nairobi airport with over 2,200 live ants in his luggage! Apparently, there’s a real market for ant collecting – people are buying colonies to keep as pets in those cool transparent ant farms. It’s wild to think someone was trying to smuggle that many ants out of the country!
Investigators found 1,948 Messor cephalotes ants, a species that collectors highly prize. Earlier reports stated the ants were placed in test tubes and concealed in Zhang’s luggage, apparently intended for shipment to China.

Zhang first pleaded not guilty, but later changed his plea to guilty. Magistrate Irene Gichobi explained the sentence was necessary to discourage a growing problem with ant trafficking, which authorities warn can severely harm the environment.
According to The Guardian, the court found Zhang showed no remorse and wasn’t truthful. He has two weeks to appeal the sentence. If he doesn’t, he may be sent back to his home country.
This incident is similar to a case last year in Kenya where four men were penalized for trying to smuggle a large number of ants out of the country.
Wildlife experts believe that illegal wildlife trade is changing. Instead of focusing on well-known items like elephant ivory, criminals are now targeting smaller, less-celebrated species that still play a vital role in the environment.
