Netflix has confirmed it’s making a sequel to its 2024 live-action Japanese series, City Hunter. Based on the popular manga by Tsukasa Hojo, City Hunter 2 is already being filmed and will be available worldwide soon.
City Hunter 2 release date window revealed
As a movie critic, I have to say Netflix Japan really hit a home run with the City Hunter film released earlier this year. It wasn’t just a hit in Japan – it immediately shot to the top of their Global Top 10 for non-English films and landed in the top ten charts in an impressive 32 countries, including major markets like France, South Korea, Hong Kong, and even Brazil. What’s even more exciting is the film’s impact on the source material; Netflix reported a noticeable jump in sales of the original City Hunter manga, which has already sold over 50 million copies since 1985. It’s great to see a live-action adaptation breathe new life into a beloved classic!
A new City Hunter movie, City Hunter 2, is expected to come out in 2027. Ryohei Suzuki will reprise his role as Ryo Saeba, the skilled and humorous private detective known for his marksmanship, fighting ability, and fondness for beautiful women. The character has been a popular figure in manga, anime, and other media for over forty years.
I’m really excited to see Misato Morita back as Kaori Makimura – she’s such a great foil to Ryo, always keeping him grounded. And it’s fantastic that Fumino Kimura is returning as Saeko Nogami too! Plus, having Keiichiro Shiraki direct again is a huge plus – he really understood the first film, and Junpei Yamaoka’s script promises a compelling story.
Suzuki expressed gratitude for the support of fans of the previous film, explaining that it made this new sequel possible. He also stated they are honored to continue working with Tsukasa Hojo’s original story, which is loved by fans globally.
He explained that he’s filming with a lot of focus and drive, keeping in mind the weight of the project. The first movie showed how Ryo and Kaori met, but this new film will be the definitive, most complete City Hunter story we’ve ever seen.
Hojo, the creator of the original manga, was happy to finally announce the sequel. He recently toured the set and was very impressed with the dedication of the production team (according to The Hollywood Reporter).
